PROCEDURE Introduction (5min.):


Attention Grabber: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCL6d0OwKt8 Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Thumbs up/ thumbs down. ASK: Do you remember what mitosis is? Do you remember what the ploidy of the cells are following mitosis? (If some say no, ask the students that remember to enlighten the class of the answer; if yes still review).General Questions: From the video does anyone know what meiosis is? What cells does meiosis occur in? How many resulting cells are there following division? Advance Organizer/Agenda: SAY: In todays lesson we will be reviewing meiosis and identifying the steps. We will be creating a flip book that will help you to break down the process. We are going to first go over the steps of meiosis then we are going to make an organizer so that you can distinguish meiosis from mitosis.

Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: SAY: This activity will require you to focus to complete the task on time. You may work with a partner if you are struggling with the activity but I would still require you to hand in your own work. Transition to Body: SAY: Meiosis and mitosis do have some similarities that we will discuss later, but today we are going to focus on the process of meiosis. As we review the process, you will recognize some similarities.

Body (13min.):
Learning Activity #1: (3 min.) Direct Instruction - Outline phases of meiosis Who can remember the phases of meiosis? Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, Telophase I, Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, Telophase II. Acronym is P-MAT What happens in each phase? In the prophase stages (I&II) the nuclear membrane and nucleolus dissolve and the DNA begins to condense; in the metaphase stages (I & II) the chromosomes align at the centre plate by the spindle fibers attaching to the centromeres (I: tetrads align; II: sister chromatids align); in anaphase stage I the cell beings to elongate and the homologous chromosomes get pulled to the poles and in anaphase stage II the cell also elongates and the sister chromatids get separated and pulled to the poles of the cell; in the telophase stages (I & II) the nuclear membrane reforms and the cytoplasm divides in a process called cytokinesis. Learning Activity #2: (8 min.) Student Hands-on activity - Create flipbook Transition: We are now going to make a visual organizer for you to remember the stages of meiosis and to breakdown the process to simplify it a bit. (Distribute flipbooks) You will be filling in the cell outlines on the flipbook with the events that occur at each stage of the cell cycle. The different stages of meiosis are listed on the tabs, so be sure to match your drawings to the correct tab. On the opposing side there is a place for you to identify a few main events that occur in the cell during that stage (1 or 2 points is good). Be sure to indicate the ploidy of the cells where it indicates you to do so. You may use your textbook or notes but try to describe it in your own words. Circulate the room to ensure that the students remain on task and to answer questions. Transition: Flip to the page of your organizer that shows where crossing over occurred. Learning Activity #3: (2 min.) Discussion Importance of crossing over What stage of meiosis does this crossing over happen? Prophase I What is crossing over? This is the process where homologous chromosomes (non-sister chromatids) exchange pieces of chromosomes. Why do you think that this is important? This is important to the process of reproduction. The sections of the chromosomes that were switched, can have hundreds or thousands of genes resulting in a chromosome with maternal and paternal decent. It is important in creating diverse genes and a vast number of alleles in the gametes. Transition: Meiosis is an integral part of the cell cycle as we will learn throughout this unit. Sponge Activity: Re-create the dance from the video on meiosis.

Closure (2 min.):
Reinforcement/Assessment of Learning: SAY: Meiosis is an important part of the cell cycle. It is important to create haploid cells to create a diploid zygote. Later in the course we will be able to see a bit of where and how you got your genes. ASK: What is the main event in telophase? Feedback From Students: Do you like the flipbook activity? Do you think it will be a useful study tool? Feedback To Students: Comment on performance and ability to complete task.
