CASE STUDY

The New Economic Policy (NEP) was originally a socio-economic restructuring affirmative action program, launched by former Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak in 1971, the aims were 1. to eradicate poverty, irrespective of race; and 2. to restructure society, so as to eliminate the identification of race with economic functions. The NEP was announced in June 1970 in the aftermath of the racial riots in 1969. Whatever is said about the immediate causes of the riots, the root cause for the unrest was socio economical imbalance. It was clear that the problem of poverty and the economic differences along racial lines were detrimental to social stability and national Unity and had to be addressed immediately. The NEP was formulated as a concerted effort to reduce poverty and restructure the economy.

ANALYSIS
The Malaysia Constitution had ruled that Chinese is handling the economic field & not allowed to enter the political field, it gives a chance for malay Chinese to boost their economic strengths NEP was the respond of the growing economic strengths of the Malaysian Chinese compared to indigenous Malay As Malay is the only who posses the rights in political field, the politicians produced a policy that can uphold the position of the indigenous malay in social and economic aspect.

CONTD
NEP told us that Malaysia had not been successful in managing the life of its people which is multiracial and multireligion In relation with nation building, the case of NEP told us that Malaysia had not been able to create a sense of brotherhood among its multiracial people as their life is much determined based on raciality.
