Name: Class: Date: Writing Project #3: What If?

This week, weve looked at what might happen if certain historical events had turned out differently, using Robert Cowleys What If?: Eminent Historians Imagine What Might Have Been. In this work, historians consider how history might have changed if events had turned out differently (if a battle had turned out differently, if a president hadnt been elected, etc.) Your task is to use this same logic to consider what weve been studying: the American Revolution. You will be writing a 3-paragraph essay answering the following question: What would have happened if the Americans had lost the Revolutionary War? Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong answer to this question . As you should know, Americans did win the Revolutionary War and became an independent country. But what if things had turned out differently? No person can say for sure. Your task is to think about what might have happened. In creating your scenario, use specific details and evidence to support it. You can use battles, historical figures, or any other information that we have covered in class. Below is the rubric that will be used to grade this assignment. It is due in class on Thursday, October 24th. 1. Assignment should be a complete 3-paragraph essay. Paragraphs should follow the previously discussed format (topic sentence, 2-3 supporting details, concluding sentence) (10 points) 2. Assignment must make an argument or statement that is clearly outlined at the beginning and supported throughout the paper. Please underline your thesis/argument. 3. Assignment should use specific evidence. Make references to historical events, figures, and ideas covered in class. Use these to back up your thesis/argument.
