Solving More Complex Problems

This year, third graders are working on more complex math problems, many involving multiple operations in one problem. We are getting comfortable with more mathematical language and working on decoding word problems.

Monitoring Comprehension and Telling Our Stories

In September, students got familiar with the routines and procedures of 3-221. Now they are rocking and rolling! In our reading unit, we are monitoring our comprehension using post-it notes and learning to visualize. In our writing unit, we are working on composing personal narratives by capturing moments from our own lives. Students have certainly created some really engaging work, which we can't wait to publish!

Unit One was focused on addition and subtraction. We learned when to use these two operations and how we can borrow and regroup. We also learned more about place value, rounding, and estimating. For the first time, we took our chapter test on computers. We could see our results as soon as we were done! Unit Two gives us an opportunity to analyze and interpret data. We get to look at data in tables and make pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots.

FALL 2013

Forces and Motion

In Science, class 3-221 is practicing using the scientific method through our studies of forces and motion. We learned about Sir Isaac Newton and his Laws of Motion. We got to see his laws in action by experimenting with balanced and unbalanced force, acceleration, and collecting data on how high a pencil can bounce!

Exploring Our World

We are learning about what factors are necessary for a civilization in Social Studies. 3-221 is utilizing map skills to explore our world and discovering how cultures work. We are learning about civics, so that we can begin to think how we would run things if we were in charge!

Donors Choose
Class 3-221 received a grant from Donors Choose for a variety of chapter books. Some of us have already begun reading these fantastic books from series like Judy Moody, Ramona, Harry Potter, and Percy Jackson. We are so grateful for the donations and we can't wait to read them all!
