Using Websites with Purpose

There are many fun websites that, with a little planning and instruction, can be used purposely to teach content SOLs. Make a Pizza is a fun a ct i vit y for Preschool Make a Pizza and Kindergarten students. They can load their pizza with cheese pepperonis, peppers, onions, mushrooms and other toppings and just have fun making a virtual pizza. However, this activity can also be used to reinforce content skills such as counting, color, following verbal directions, and size-related vocabulary. Instead of letting students randomly add toppings, give them instructions for each topping: Place 5 large pieces of cheese on your pizza. Add 10 of the largest pepperoni slices. Add 6 green peppers. There are nine different toppings in addition to cheese and each one has at least 2 options to choose from. After the children have finished adding the toppings, print the pages out. Students will need to know how to type their name if you choose to do this. The pizzas print in black and white. Back in the classroom, use these pages to further reinforce color and size: Color the large tomatoes red. Color the small tomatoes orange. Color the cheese yellow. Note: To ensure that every child can find the toppings for this part of the activity you may want to create and print your own pizza and make copies for students to use.

Internet Safety
The Virginia Department of Education requires that every teacher incorporate Internet Safety into their curriculum. For younger children, this can be as simple as reminding them to never use their last name on a website, what to do if a bad word or picture pops on the screen, and so forth. For more information, ideas, and activities check out the DOEs book Guidelines and Resources for Internet Safety in Schools.

As eMediaVA increases their library, this service should actually replace Discovery Education and make it easier to find resources since all resources match VA SOLs instead of SOLs for other states which might not be useful for us. http://www.emediava.org/
