A Fable for Tomorrow

In the essay A Fable for Tomorrow by Rachel Carson she illustrates a small town in the heart of America that was once a beautiful sight to be seen, until a strange blight caused by humans destroyed it. Carson uses diction and detail to show the changes in the town over a short period of time, by doing so this helps Carson convey the human responsibility for taking care of the environment. In the beginning of the essay Carson uses words such as Harmony, Delighted, Beauty, and Prosperous to illustrate an image in our heads of the little town before the blight occurred. These are pleasant words that illustrate a place Where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings. A little town with prosperous farms, fields of grain, hillsides of orchard, wild flowers, countless birds, and clear streams. After the first two paragraphs the scenery drastically changes. The pleasant words stated before are changed to words such as Blight, evil, maladies, death, moribund, lifeless, and witch craft. Carson uses unpleasant words to emphasize how badly the town was destroyed. Carson once stated that the earth was a place to be respected, not destroyed by human greed and activities. In her essay she states that there was a granular powder on the patches yet farmers, doctors, etc. didnt know why adults, children, animals, and crops were dying. The people had done it to themself. By stating this quote Carson points out the fact that we disrespected the earth, and destroyed it for our own good and now theres nothing left of it. Carson states at the end of her essay that This town does not actually exist, but it might easily have a thousand counterparts in America or elsewhere in the world. Because all over the world we are tearing down some part of nature or killing animals, etc. For our own personal good, even though we can clearly see that its killing off other species.

It is our environmental responsibility to take care of the planet since we are the number one species living on it. Yet we are the ones who destroy more and more of it every day. I have come to the conclusion that is it our environmental responsibility to take care of our planet, because if we dont start taking better care of it, then its going to stop taking care of us. We have the responsibility of nature, everything around us animals, plants, etc. We take advantage of the following not really thinking that these things are vital for humans existence. Without animals we wouldnt eat, same with plants, we wouldnt eat, and we wouldnt have fresh air therefor we wouldnt breathe. In the article Saving the Environment is Our Responsibility by Catherine Thompson she starts of her article by saying The majority of people dont care about the environment anymore. Thompson states that the reason people dont care is because of technology, money, and greed. Thompson speaks about how technology is getting out of hand. Thats as technology increases, humans affect nature more. She makes a joke saying that maybe if we went back to ancient lifestyles then the earth would be saved. Our life and morals are ruled by money. Because our lives are ruled on money that makes human beings greedy. A younger girl had made a comment to Thompsons article saying We are to materialistic, we all want that knew iPhone, or a huge house, we wont everything we cant afford, but we dont need it. Thompson states that American use to be covered with forests now theres a McDonalds at every corner. This brings up so if our planet is filled with greedy, materialistic, technology powered people then the question is Can the earth survive the impact, and can the future change? This question was brought up in the essay The Conundrum of consumption by Alan Durning. We knowingly abuse the land, savaging the present by savaging the future. Durning speaks about all the bad things that humans have done to the planet such as new machinery, tearing down forests, etc. So what are we going to do about it?

Whose responsibility is it? In the essay Whos responsibility? It begins with saying that we as the young generation are too young to be responsible to deal with nature, but we can still manage it. Nowadays, the younger generations are the heirs of the modern technology addiction. So they agree with the other scholars saying that we have too much technology and we are addicted to it. But they disagree with humans being greedy. They state Im am glad to emphasize that selfish is not our general attitude. They back up this sentence by saying we have been sharing this planet for million and millions of years with other planets, animals, etc. So how can we be selfish? Dudley Ellis on the other hand states in his essay that we are. To very often we look at the environment as something that provides aesthetic pleasure for us, but have we ever consciously taken the time to contemplate what would it be like without a healthy environment. Dudley is talking specifically about his home, Barbados. He speaks about how it is up the people in Barbados to take care of it, that the environment impacts each of us so it is fair to say that is our task it care for it. So what things can we do to better take care of our planet? In 5 easy ways to love our planet by Nina Spitzer she makes a comparison saying that the earth is not like a car or shoes, by making this comparison she brings to our attention again that humans are materialistic, only wanting shoes and cars. Spitzer makes the compares the earth to a new car or shoes by saying that they are not the same! When your shoes are finally worn out and your car runs its last mile you can purchase a new one. But guess what? When the planet is all used up thats it! Our planet is not a thing like shoes or a car, its a living, breathing, system and, just like the people we love, when it dies it wont come back. After stating this very straight forward and intense paragraph she gives very easy and simples things you can do, not even as a daily task to save the planet.

Every essay, article, or documentary I researched all stated that it is our responsibility as humans to take care of the environment, they all also stated things that would happen if we didnt take that responsibility. Such as animals and plants dying, and even human beings eventually. They all showed some comparison to A fable for tomorrow pointing out and showing that it is our responsibility to do these things because we are the ones who are destroying the planet. Not one of the other essays, articles, or documentaries stated that is not our responsibility. They all stated that the planet/ environment takes such good care of us and we should return the favor. And if we dont then we will just have to suffer the consequences.

Adaption Project Reflection

I chose A Fable for Tomorrow because I felt I could connect with the text really well. I try to do my part to taking care of the environments by recycling, not littering, using less water, saving electricity, and only driving the car when needed. I also chose it because it was one of the few texts I actually understood, and created an image in my mind of the words that were said in Carsons essay. After reading her essay it also brought to my attention that we as human being can be selfish, and especially lately Ive noticed more. I notice more people being careless towards the planet. This essay had a huge impact on me personally as well, before I just only cared if I recycled and didnt litter, etc. But I recently cracked down on my family as well. Did you recycle that? I you going to throw that in the garbage? I think that if people cracked down on other more often it would help out a lot more too towards taking better care of the environment. When I was trying to critically analyze the text A Fable for Tomorrow I just read the text over and over again. I underlined things that stood out to me, what kind of techniques the

author used, what words they chose to use, and I created an image in my head. When looking up other texts addressing the environmental issue/ responsibility I simply typed in things such as Our environmental Responsibility, Who responsibility, why take care of the planet etc. When researching all the texts they all pretty much said the same things, some pointed out more detail than other, where others were very brief and just stated yes it is our responsibility, the end. When researching other texts just like Carsons essay a lot of them brought to my attention about how careless human beings are, and how materialistic we are. All the texts connected by pointing out these things. When doing the adaption, I had so many different images in my head, the original image I pictured from A Fable for tomorrow then picture I created from the other texts all of which were picture of people being careless and materialistic to such an extreme that the people surroundings were destroyed, in my head the scenery around the people, or the scenery in deserted areas had looked like a wild fire had set loose and destroyed the planet, because thats what I picture our planet to look like once the humans are done living on the planet, or even before then because we might kill out our own species with all the things we are creating and destroying. When picture the people in all the images I thought of I picture myself a lot because I will admit I am just like everyone else. Im materialistic too. Everyone is. So I am just picturing myself in that situation. After doing all the research and reading different texts and deeply thinking into my inner thoughts, I realize that I knew a lot more about the subject then I thought, but I did learn a lot. Doing this project is brought back a lot of memories of when I was little in elementary school, the teachers always taught us to try and take care of our environment, but nowadays kids no nothing about it. Kids know more about whats going on with our government and economy

then what going on around us, right at our feet. It just shows how bottled up humans beings are from the environment, nobody brings to our attention anymore about how bad the planet is being taken care of. All you hear about is the new technology, money, government, etc. When doing this project I did think It was fun to just read others point of view and thoughts of the subject but also sad because when I asked my siblings what they knew about the environment and what things they could do to help they were at a stump, they didnt know how to answer because they havent been taught. I think this is a very serious issue. How are we suppose take our environmental responsibility to the next level if nobody knows anything about it, especially younger generations?
