Session Timelines, Materials, and Assignments


Session 1: This session will last a total of 55 minutes. Sessions Session 1 Topics 8:30-8:45 Introduction/Icebreaker 8:45-9:25 Develop a study-schedule Assignments *Participate in activity *Weekly Schedule *Daily Agenda

Material Timer (on site) Class roster printout (will be created once learners register for workshop) Hypothetical Syllabus (Appendix A, make one copy for each participant) Weekly schedule template (Appendix B, make one copy for each participant) Pens (as needed if participants dont have one) Activity: Introduction/Icebreaker. Time line: 8:30-8:45 1. Facilitator will have a printout of the class roster and will ask learners to add or verify a valid email address next to their name for the online workshop purpose, as learners fill-up the roster handout, the facilitator will introduce self and will cover basic logistics (breaks, bathroom location, snacks, and drinks). 2. Facilitator will randomly separate students into groups of two, each group of students will have one minute to interview each other and gather this basic information about each other: name, major, and one detail they want to share (hobbies, family, job). Once the minute is over each of the learners will take turns to stand up and introduce their group partner to the rest of the class. Purpose: the following two activities aim on helping Learners who plan on returning to college with time management skills. Since these learners need to balance job and family/life responsibilities and need to create space to accommodate their academic tasks to their existing schedule, creating a weekly schedule and a daily agenda will help them visualize their time availability and help them administer their time available accordingly. Activity: Weekly Schedule. Timeline: 8:45-9:05. The facilitator will open this activity by distributing a hypothetical syllabus and a weekly schedule template to learners; the facilitator will also provide a basic outline for these activities as well as stress how important it is to follow instructions closely and respect timelines for a successful outcome in this workshop. 1. Once all participants have a copy of the above documents, the facilitator will ask learners to first fill-up the template with their routine daily activities and tasks in detail, including weekends. Then, the facilitator will ask them to use the hypothetical course syllabus provided and to insert all due dates for week 1 as indicated on the syllabus in the appropriate line created specifically for this purpose

INSTRUCTORS INSTRUCTIONS Activity: Daily Agenda. Timeline: 9:05-9:25. 1. In this activity the facilitator will instruct learners to add for each day, the time and the assignments they will complete or start in order to comply with due dates while accommodating their other activities and daily tasks. ________________________________________________________________________ Session 2: This session will last a total of 1 hour Sessions Session 2 Topics 9:25-10:25 Access and navigate the workshop on CourseSites by Blackboard Assignments *Create courses account and access the course *Locate Syllabus and Schedule *Post Introduction in proper forum *Upload introduction in the Assignments forum *Send email

Material: Laptop and projector (on site) Workshop video tutorial (see link in previous page) Online course invitation (will be sent once learners email addresses are retrieved) Computer with Internet access and word processing program (on site) Purpose: The purposes of all the activities in this session are specific to online courses, and will serve as a way to help learners become familiar with Blackboard navigation (or similar Learning Management Systems). Furthermore, these activities are aimed at providing learners with immediate practice; as they will explore different areas of the platform, it will allow them to practice a few typical assignments. Activity: Create courses account, locate Syllabus and schedule. Timeline: 9:25-9:55 After showing the short video tutorial the facilitator will ask learners to open their personal emails inbox folder and look for the email invitation to CourseSites 1. Learners need to open the email and follow the link CourseSites by Blackboard. 2. Once on the CourseSites page learners will have to create a student account, and enter their username and password to gain access to the online Workshop. 3. Once learners have accessed the workshop, they should locate the sessions Syllabus and Schedule. Activity: Post introduction in the appropriate forum. Timeline: 9:55-10:05 1. By following instructions on the syllabus learners should navigate to the discussion board page and in the Introduction forum they should create an introductory thread. 2. In this thread Learners should be careful to include at least: name, hobbies, career interest, major, and any other information they are willing to share. Do not exceed one paragraph in length.

INSTRUCTORS INSTRUCTIONS Activity: Upload introduction in the Assignments forum. Timeline 10:05-10:15 1. Learners should complete this activity by using their introductory thread paragraph and save it as a word document. 2. Once their document is created, they should save it in their desktop or documents. 3. Learners then will navigate the workshop site to find the assignment page and upload their word document in this forum. 4. This assignment needs to be completed by the end of the time frame allotted for this activity. Activity: Send email to instructor. Time line 10:15-10:25 1. This is the last assignment for this session, learners are required to find and use the send email tool, and send an email to their instructor. 2. The email should contain: Learners first impression/reaction to Blackboards navigation. Questions (if any) related to this online experience. Difficulties (if any) they might have experienced. Not to exceed one paragraph. Before starting the next session take a 10 minute break, facilitator will stress the importance of being back in class on time! ________________________________________________________________________ Session 3: this session will last a total of 1 hour and five minutes Sessions Session 3 Topics 10:35-11:40 Find and select one scholarship from given website Assignments *Visit site and fill-up form *Choose a scholarship and prepare 1 minute mini report *Presentation of mini reports *Email scholarship info to facilitator

Material: Computer with Internet access and word processor (on site) Pen (on site) Scholarship handout (Appendix C, make one copy for each participants) Timer (on site) Purpose: The purpose of the activities in this session is to give learners an opportunity to search for financial support in the form of scholarships. Learners will also share information as a group in the form of mini presentations. Last, by sending an email to the facilitator learners will have to synthesize information gathered from this activity either personally or from another participant.

Activity: Visit site and create account. Timeline: 10:35-10:45 The facilitator will open this activity by distributing a handout containing a scholarship search website and detailed instructions; the facilitator will also provide a basic outline for the activities in this session and will again stress how important it is to follow instructions closely and respect timelines. 1. Once all participants have a copy of the handout, learners will visit the site by entering the URL address in their Internet Browser. 2. Once the page opens they will locate the scholarship search section and fill-up the search form. Activity: Find a scholarship and prepare 1 minute mini report. Timeline: 10:45-11:00 For this activity learners will follow instructions in their handout and will: 1. Look through the list of scholarships produced by their search 2. Choose one scholarship 3. Click on its name and create a mini report, bullet style, indicating: Name of Scholarship, Eligibility Requirements, Application Requirements, General Information, Deadlines and Fees. Activity: Presentation of mini reports. Timeline: 11:00-11:30 Learners will take turns and will present their findings to the rest of the class. They have one minute available for this activity, the facilitator will make sure that the timeline is respected. Activity: Email scholarship info to facilitator. Timeline 11:30-11:40 After listening to the mini reports learners will choose one scholarship (either the one they found or another presented by classmates), they will write a paragraph indicating the name of the scholarship they chose, the requirements, and deadlines for that scholarship in a word document format, and will send it to the workshop facilitator via email by the end of this workshops section. ________________________________________________________________________ Session 4: this session will last a total of thirty minutes Sessions Session 4 Topics 11:40-12:10 Begin a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application Assignments *Find FAFSA website and start application *Complete demographic information of FAFSA application

Materials: Computer with Internet access (on site) Scholarship handout (will use same one) Timer (on site) Purpose: The purpose the activity in this session is to give learners an opportunity to further their search skills for finding financial support in the form of Pell Grants and or Loans.

Activity: Find FAFSA website site and start application. Timeline: 11:40-11:50 For this activity learners will closely follow instructions in their handout and will: 1. Locate What is a Pell Grant article 2. Within the article find the FAFSA website link and follow it 3. Once the page opens click on Start a New FAFSA Activity: Complete demographic information of FAFSA application. Timeline: 11:50-12:10 During this last activity, learners will begin their FAFSA application and complete the demographic information section of it.

Material: Course Assessment (Appendix D, make one copy for each participant) Purpose: the purpose of this activity is to improve. Gather learners feedback on the workshop content and timelines and on the facilitators performance, with the scope to implement changes as suggested to improve the quality of the workshop. Activity: Complete Course Assessment. Timeline: 12:10-12:20 Facilitator will briefly introduce this short activity, will find a volunteer among the students that will distribute and collect handouts upon completion. Facilitator will instruct volunteer to collect handouts once completed, seal them in a provided envelope and deliver to a specific mailbox within the campus, then leave the classroom for ten minutes to maintain assessment integrity and learners privacy. Volunteer learner will: 1. Distribute the Course Assessment handout to each participant 2. Participants will complete their handout and give it to volunteer learner 3. Volunteer will put the handouts in the provided envelope once completed, will seal the envelope, and will deliver it to the designated mailbox within the campus. Activity: Wrap-up end of workshop. Timeline: 12:20-12:30 Facilitator will thank participants; will encourage those who still have questions to stay longer to make an appointment and will dismiss the class.
