I Do
(About 5 mins)
Have children gather their digit cards out of their pencil cases. Gather children into a semicircle around me. Begin by explaining were starting a new game called Less Than You. (Make sure any behaviors are addressed. Have students put cards on the floor in front of them so they arent being played with). Have a child volunteer to play a round with the teacher in order to demonstrate how the game is played. (Demonstrate a couple times for the below level group). We Do (About 2 mins)
Have the children talk about what theyre seeing as the game is being demonstrated. Then do a round together. Have questions at the end to make sure every student understands the object of the game and how to play. If they arent 100% sure, pair them with a student who does know, and can teach them. You Do (About 5-8 mins)
Put students into pairs and begin game. GAME: Each child draws 2 cards. Out of the two drawn, they set the higher number in a discard pile and grab 1-2 more (depending on level). They then add the numbers on each of their 2-3 cards and determine the sum. Then one of the students decides if they think their number is lower than their partners. Both set cards down, and the student with the lowest sum is the winner receiving all the cards.
Everyday Mathematics
I can quietly and efficiently walk through the hall on my way out of the school during fire alarms. I can identify the safe zone outside of the school.
Begin by explaining the importance of fire safety and safe walking in the hallways to the safe zone located outside of the school. Have students get into groups and make posters on the importances talked about. Have each group present. Have students line up at the door as they practiced when lining up earlier. Have students practice walking in the halls quietly and quickly. Show the students where the safe zone is outside of the school. Have students practice. (If they create noise or arent respectful have them immediately sit back down, explain to them why you brought them back. Have them give ideas on how they can do it better. Then have them try it again). When theyve accomplished the task with 100% accuracy, give the signal of thumbs up, and have them return to their seats quietly.
