Company Name: Red Audience: Young Adults Chocolate Selection: White Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate (additionally: chocolate sprinkles, chocolate toppings and hot chocolate) Marketing Strategy: Young adults these days are very interested in wit and irony. Interactivity draws in younger audiences as well. I therefore propose to use interactivity along with irony in the packaging design of these products. For this project I am trying to more type elements than usual, because I am used to putting more illustrations than type in my design. I am doing this because trying new and different things helps me to break out of the box. I am also heavily invested in different methods of storytelling, because stories interest everyone, not just young adults. I am therefore introducing some kind of word play or storytelling method into my design, so that not only will the visuals be catching to the eye, but the words and descriptions will also be intriguing.
When I first began my research, I decided to look for chocolate packaging that popped out and was witty and ironic. I noticed that most of these designs were eye catching because they emphasized type and block colors or color themes. I decided that I would use these two principles in my design, not only to cater to the demographic, but also to think out of the box and use something besides illustration in my work. I then went on to research how the word red was associated with chocolates. Usually, the color red is associated with valentines day chocolates or red m&ms, so although there was a lot of material there I could use, I didnt want to pander to the stereotype of color. I wanted to tie it in ironically with the design, and keep it as a consistent company logo rather than turn it into a gimmick.
After I scanned in and traced a few workable templates for the products I selected, I sketched a few ideas that would be appealing to the selected demographic. The one that resonated most was an idea that included extensive word play and potential interactivity. Each bar of chocolate would have a segment of a sentence, and if rearranged with the other bars of chocolate, could create different sentences and different meanings. However, it was fairly difficult to create something so in-depth and comprehensive without a system or model to base it on. I did more research and found a word game that I had come across years ago that was circulated on the internet. Each section of the sentence was identified by different numbers or months of the year, and by choosing the months and numbers, the viewers constructed each sentence themselves. For example, my birthday was April 20, 1990. Using these numbers in the code of this game, the sentence I would construct is: I licked a baseball bat in your bathroom. The code itself is included on the next page, and anyone who reads it can use it as well. This word games system heavily influenced the system in my design.
Pick the month you were born: > January- I kicked > February I loved > March I karate chopped > April- I licked > May- I jumped on > June- I smelled > July I did the Macarena With > August I had lunch with > September- I danced with > October- I sang to > November I yelled at > December I ran over Pick the day (number) you were born on: > 1- a birdbath > 2- a monster > 3- a phone > 4- a fork > 5- a snowman > 6- a gangster > 7- my mobile phone > 8- my dog > 9- my best friends > 10- my neighbor > 11- my science teacher > 12- a banana > 13- a fireman > 14- a stuffed animal > 15- a goat > 16- a pickle > 17- your mom > 18- a spoon > 19- a smurf > 20- a baseball bat > 21- an assassin > 22- Bruce Lee > 23- a noodle > 24- a squirrel > 25- a football player > 26- my sister > 27- my brother > 28- an iPod > 29- a surfer > 30- a homeless guy > 31- a camel
Pick the last number of the year you were born: > 1 In my car > 2 On your car > 3 In a hole > 4 Under your bed > 5 Riding a Motorcycle > 6 sliding down a hill > 7 in an elevator > 8- at the dinner table > 9 In line at the bank > 0 in your bathroom Pick the color shirt you are wearing: > White because Im cool like that > Black because thats how I roll > Pink because Im NOT crazy > Red because the voices told me to > Blue because Im sexy and I do what I want > Green because I think I need some serious help > Purple because Im AWESOME! > Gray- because Big Bird said to > Yellow because someone offered me $1,000,000 > Orange because my family thinks Im stupid > Brown because I can > Other- because Im an assassin! > None- because I cant control myself!

SUBJECT (sub-jekt) noun - a noun phrase functioning as one of the main componunts of a clause, being the element about which the rest of the clause is predicated, such as the chocolate in: We do what we can with what we have, and what we have is the best chocolate! ORIGIN- Middle English: from Old French suget, from Latin subjectus brought under, past participle of subicere, from sub- under + jacere throw.
WE DO WHAT WE CAN, WITH WHAT WE HAVE WHEN WE HAVE IT, AND HOW WE ARE IS WHO WE ARE AND WHO WE ARE IS WHAT WE DO, AND WE DO WHAT WE CAN WITH WHAT WE HAVE, AND WHAT WE HAVE IS THE BEST CHOCOLATE.

Combining the colors and sentence pieces took a great deal of time and effort, but eventually I found a system that worked. Each bar of chocolate contains a part of a sentence. The dark chocolate bar has the conjunction (a word which connects two parts of a sentence together), the milk chocolate bar has the subject and verb (the word that describes action or the subject of the sentence) and the white chocolate bar has the adverb (a word that describes situation or spacial relationships.) Tieing this system in with the other products was also difficult, however the solution to this was already found for me. I needed a method of making each products name pop out amidst all the other type. The way I did this was simply making the names black while leaving the rest of the type various colors. This solution, which was not originally included in the other packaging, was what helped tie the other products in with the chocolate bars design. Instead of having just the name of the product, the name will be part of a sentence, just as the names of the chocolate bars are.
