LESSON 9 (Thursday)

Teacher Overview: You will find butcher paper in the ASB office. Tear off 12 sheets of paper; each piece should be at least 2 feet in length. This lesson will provide a basic overview of the key events of the Cold War. Visit each group of students while they are working and give them ideas and suggestions of what events to include. Help the students to evaluate the successes and failures of the events and how they affected world politics. Objectives: Students will chart the Cold War victories of the United States and the Soviet Union and hypothesize on who had more victories. Students should also analyze and discuss the ways that these conflicts could have been avoided. Content Standards: Sub-Strand 10.9: Students analyze the international developments in the postWorld War II world. Sub-Strand 10.9.2: Analyze the causes of the Cold War, with the free world on one side and Soviet client states on the other, including competition for influence in such places as Egypt, the Congo, Vietnam, and Chile. Common Core Standards: 10.SL.1 Initiate and participate in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively 10.SL.5 Make strategic use of digital media in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence to add interest Technology Standards: Creativity and Innovation Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Research and Information Fluency Students: -Plan strategies to guide inquiry. -Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. -Process data and report results. Anticipatory Set: Please remind the students that I will be collecting their journals at the end of this unit and giving them a participation grade. Students will write for five minutes in their journals based on the topic, To what degree did the USA win the Cold War? Use factual evidence to defend your position. Instruction: PART 1--Pass out the butcher paper to each group of 4 students. They can use colored pens, pencils, and markers. There is a bag of markers in my desk. Students will construct a chart categorizing the key events of The Cold War. If the event represented a victory for the Soviet Union, shade that event in red. If the event represented a victory for the United States, shade that event in blue. Use the Spodek textbook pages 725-765 for specific information. PART 2--Create a crossword puzzle using the Cold War vocabulary words. Use the Internet site http://www.puzzle-maker.com/CW/ Make sure that every word fits in the puzzle correctly. Switch your crossword puzzles with your partner and see if you can figure them out. Vocabulary words are found in chapter 21 in their textbooks. PART 3--Using iPads, students will work together in groups on their Talking Tom projects. Please distribute the Talking Tom project rubrics to each student. Show the students where to find information on the Cuban Missile Crisis, p. 733-735 (Spodek), and Voicethread, The Cold War, part 2. The Voicethread presentation is posted on the class wiki. Homework: Students will collaborate on Talking Tom project, which is due tomorrow. Students should view the Cuban Missile Crisis Voicethread presentation at home and read the textbook. Make sure that every student has a copy of the grading rubric.
