Nouns and Pronouns

To help us in grammar, were going to be using different colors for different parts of speech. Lets label these in our spirals for future reference: Nouns/Pronouns Verbs Adjectives Adverbs Conjunctions Prepositions Interjections

List as many nouns as possible using this picture as inspiration. (You can make things up if needed)

**Remember! Nouns are people, places, things, and ideas

Group your list into 2 categories.


What do you notice? There are 2 kinds of nouns: 1. Common nouns 2. Proper nouns

Common Nouns: Are not specific So they are not capitalized


Proper Nouns Name a specific person, place, thing, idea Its a name, so it must be capitalized

Be careful with Mom and Dad.

My mom is great!
Mom is great! My dad likes computers.

Dad likes computers.


What do you notice?

Using your nouns from your list earlier, group by common and proper nouns. Add some more to either group if you dont have a whole lot!

HW: Make a T-chart list of all the common nouns and proper nouns you can think of related to Renner MS.

Remember when we would ask ourselves in what? to find the prepositional phrase? Ex: I went in the store.

In what? The store. this is the object of a preposition. It is always a noun.

HW: 1. Find 2 sentences with nouns. 2. Use yellow and orange to label the nouns and verb(s). 3. Label the subject-noun. 4. Label any direct object-nouns. 5. Label the object of preposition-nouns. ** If the sentence you chose doesnt have prepositions, choose a different one!

But, what if I have more than 1 of a person, place, thing, or idea? We also have singular and plural nouns!

So here are some simple rules to remember for plural nouns: 1. Most add s or es to the end 2. Consonant + y = change y to i, add es 3. Vowel + y = add s 4. f or fe = change f to v, add es 5. Know the really irregular nouns (children, mice, etc.)

Noun or Nouns? There will be 2 teams. A spokesperson for each team will come to the board. Team 1 will give a noun to Team 2 Team 2 must correctly write the nouns plural form on the board. If Team 2 is incorrect, a new spokesperson will come up, and it is now Team 2s turn to give a noun to Team 1. If Team 2 is correct, the spokesperson stays, and it is now Team 2s turn to give a noun to Team 1.

HW: 1. Look around your house write down at least 10 nouns 2. For each noun, write its plural form 3. Try to have nouns that use the different spelling rules

Lets talk about pronouns!


Similar nouns, there are two kinds of pronouns: 1. Subject pronouns 2. Object pronouns What do you think the difference is between these two kinds of pronouns?

What do you notice about these pronouns? Subject pronouns take the place of a noun used as a subject. Object pronouns take the place of a noun used as an object (direct object or object of a preposition).

Using the pronouns I and me can be tricky The trick to using the correct pronoun is to use it by itself

Why do we use pronouns in our writing? Shortens our writing Creates point of view in our writing
Pronouns replace nouns that means: When we use pronouns in our writing, we have to make sure that the readers understand what the pronouns are replacing

The noun being replaced by a pronoun is called an antecedent.

There are too many its that we cant really understand exactly what is being described.

Using pronouns means you must have clear and understandable antecedents.

HW: 1. Glue the page into your notes. 2. Highlight or circle all the pronouns in yellow. 3. Draw arrows from the pronouns to their antecedents.
