Profundity

The profundity scale planes provide a perspective for comprehending something unknown through the known; promoting analogical and metaphorical thinking to solve problems and gain insight. It is a heuristic device that leads us to discover new knowledge or new understandings.

Rationale
Profundity helps students

Explore and reflect on universal themes and substantive issues from oral, visual, and written texts. Identify and categorize key ideas, concepts, and perspectives found in text. Draw conclusions based on their understanding of differing views presented in texts. Build and develop comprehension skills

Expository Profundity Scale

Literal Plane Reader is primarily aware of the literal facts and details of the text. Summary Plane Reader is aware of the literal facts, main ideas, and can summarize the text. Schema Plane Reader questions and relates new information to prior knowledge to enhance understanding.

Expository Profundity Scale

Concept Plane Reader identifies the critical attributes, relevant information and the accuracy of the information to get to meaning. Universal Plane Reader is aware of universal truths, theories, principles, social implications, and text connections to the world beyond.

Narrative Profundity Scale

Physical Plane Reader is aware primarily only of the physical actions of the characters. Mental Plane Reader is aware of the physical and intellectual actions of the characters. Moral Plane Reader is aware of the physical and intellectual actions of characters in light of an ethical code.

Narrative Profundity Scale

Psychological Plane Reader is aware of the psychological forces influencing the characters physical and intellectual actions in light of an ethical code. Analogical Plane Reader is aware of the analogies that can be drawn between different stories, characters or ideas.

Narrative Profundity Scale

Philosophical Plane Reader is aware of the universal truths expounded by the author through the physical, intellectual, and ethical behavior of the characters under the influence of psychological forces. Transformational Plane Reader is aware that they can use the universal truths of the story and the analogies made to generalize.
