If this year's CES in Las Vegas was anything to go by, we are hurtling towards an era of fully interactive flexible displays and fancy eyewear that can simulate a 150-inch screen (read our roundup show on page 28). But we also know that Vegas is no benchmark for practicality or value for ‘money. For all such things, we need to turn our antennas back towards home, because there is a curious parallel show going on in our backyard that will make 2013 the year of the homegrown smartphone, Our market isn fact going through @ mini-revolution, with mare and mare consumers suddenly fincing powerful smartphones within easy reach. There are two simple reasons: access to technology and pricing. The game is changing rapidly due to the access to turnkey smartehane building solutions that ‘many desi smartphone vendors currently enjoy. This is a concent that has already taken China by storm, with local manufacturers fighting ta usurp the tap spots from plobal brands. Flagship smartphones now routinely cost more than Rs 40,0001 Sure, we could argue that many homegrawn vendors provide nothing groundbreaking, All they Use is a turnkey solution from some chipset vendor, which could very easily be replicated by anyone, They're not going to win any awards for innovation or shatter any performance records But in aworld of (mostly Android) smartphones, they affer solid products with bang-on pricing ‘Suner-phones with ther sky-high specs and hardware will continue to be priced astranamically, but there's already a happy middle ground of smartphones priced at V/Sth ofthis level, and consumers are lanping them up. This augurs very wel fr us!
