LAB 2 Introduction to Dsch Schematic Entry and simulation of a CMOS inverter

Lab Contents: Section-1 Introduction Section-2 Section-3 Schematic entry of an Inverter Simulation of an Inverter

1. Introduction
In this lab another VLSI tool Dsch is studied. The main objective of this lab is to understand the features of this software and practice schematic entry and simulation of simple devices like MOSFETS and inverter. The DSCH3 program is a logic editor and simulator. DSCH3 is used to validate the architecture of the logic circuit before the microelectronics design is started. DSCH3 provides a user-friendly environment for hierarchical logic design, and fast simulation with delay analysis, which allows the design and validation of complex logic structures. Some techniques for low power design are described in the manual. DSCH3 also features the symbols, models and assembly support for 8051 and 18f64. DSCH3 also includes an interface to SPICE. In the next section we will discover the important features of software in detail.

2. Schematic entry of an inverter

Dsch is a very user friendly tool and schematic entry in an easy task. Open Dsch2.exe. Select the nNMOS transistor from Symbol Library on top right and drag it to the main screen. Select the nNMOS transistor from Symbol Library on top right and drag it to the main screen. Similarly select supply and ground symbols from Symbol Library and drag them to the main screen. Connect all these symbols as shown in the figure-1. You can use Add a line command (figure-2) to connect different nodes of these symbols

Figure 1: Inverter Circuit

Figure 2: Add a line Command Add a Button Symbol to the input and Light symbol to the output of the inverter from Symbols library. This completes your inverter schematic entry. Your inverter should look like figure-3

Run: >Simulate -> Run Simulation A Simulation control window appears. Check options Show wire state and Show pin state. Click on input button to change its state from 0 to 1 and vice versa and see how pMOS and nMOS transistors are switched on and off and the output goes high and low.
