Students should be provided with Student Worksheet One to guide their research and ensure essential knowledge is established.

Discussion Questions How would you describe a non-government organization? Apart from Nutrition Australia and the Heart Foundation, identify three other non-government organisations which promote healthy eating. VicHealth defines healthy eating as about more than just eating nutritious foods. It also encompasses inherent cultural, economic and social factors of buying and preparing food and sharing it with others. Based on what you have learnt write your own definition of healthy eating in 150 words or less.

Applying the Lesson to the ExamBy providing students with an example of how the information they have learnt within a lesson may be featured within the end of year exam, preparation for the exam can begin from day one and continued throughout the year, enabling a higher level of comprehension and greater ability to construct answers to exam questions. The example Past Exam Question can be set for students homework and can provide an indication of each students understanding of key knowledge and skills, acting as a valuable formative assessment, monitoring students learning and progression.

Example Past Exam QuestionThe Heart Foundation is a non-government agency that provides dietary advice to help maintain healthy weight to lower the risk of contracting a range of diseases. The Heart Foundation advises the following. Eat a variety of foods. Include vegetables, whole grains, fruit, nuts and seeds every day. Choose healthier fats and oils. Try to limit sugary, fatty and salty takeaway meals and snacks.

VCE Health & Human Development, Unit 3, Outcome 2 8

Drink mainly water.

Compare this advice with that provided by the government in The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. (4 MARKS)

Example AnswerThe following are examples of possible answers. - Both models recommend eating a wide variety of foods. - The Australian Guide to Health Eating suggests eating mostly breads and cereals, which differs from the recommendations made by the Heart Foundation. - Both recommend the inclusion of water each day and the inclusion of vegetables, whole grains, fruit, nuts and seeds. - The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating does not make reference to choosing healthier fats and oils, which is recommended by the Heart Foundation. - The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating provides a picture of the foods and the proportion in which they should be eaten, which provides a better guide to which foods to eat and quantities of food. - The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating provides information on the quantities of each food or sample serving sizes that should be eaten, which is not provided in the advice from the Heart Foundation. - The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating recommends serving ranges for different ages and takes into account individual preferences through Sample A and B diets.

Unit 3, Outcome Two

Lesson Topic: Introduction to Nutrition Australia

Learning Intentions-Gain an understanding of Nutrition Australia

-Gain an understanding of Nutrition Australias role in healthy eating promotion -Gain and understanding of the Healthy Living Pyramid

Essential Prior KnowledgeStudents will have an understanding of Australian Non-Government Organisation, the purpose and aims of each and the role each plays within health promotion.

Resources for LessonNutrition Australia-Healthy Living Pyramid Worksheet worksheet is designed to extend students knowledge of Nutrition Australia and the role this organization plays within Health Eating Promotion, specifically in relation to the Healthy Living Pyramid.

Lesson ObjectiveLesson is designed to enhance students understanding of non-government organisations within Australia and their function in relation to healthy eating promotion. Further, the lesson is specifically designed to enable students to establish an understanding of the function of Nutrition Australia, as this is highlighted within the VCE health and Human Development study guide as essential key knowledge required for the end of year exam.

Overview of Lesson Two Lesson Two is designed to extend students understanding of Australias Non-Government organisations. Specifically students will gain an understanding of each major Australian nongovernment organisations role in the provision of dietary advice to Australians and the role each plays within healthy eating promotion.

VCE Health & Human Development, Unit 3, Outcome 2 10

Students require in-depth knowledge of Nutrition Australias role in healthy eating promotion and dietary advice specifically. Therefore, the provided PowerPoint presentation aims to extend students understanding of Nutrition Australias function within Australian health promotion, with a specific focus upon healthy eating promotion and dietary guidelines. Students should be given the Nutrition Australias Healthy Living Worksheet to complete following the presentation of the PowerPoint presentation. Students should utilize the information from within this less and the previous lesson, in which students researched non-government organisations.

Discussion Questions

Compare your own diet to the Healthy Living Pyramid and note any differences. Suggest changes you could make to your food intake to correspond with the recommendations of this food model. Outline the objectives of Nutrition Australia. In your opinion, do you think they have been achieved? Why or why not?

Applying the Lesson to the ExamBy providing students with an example of how the information they have learnt within a lesson may be featured within the end of year exam, preparation for the exam can begin from day one and continued throughout the year, enabling a higher level of comprehension and greater ability to construct answers to exam questions. The example Past Exam Question can be set for students homework and can provide an indication of each students understanding of key knowledge and skills, acting as a valuable formative assessment, monitoring students learning and progression.

Example Past Exam QuestionDraw one conclusion about the effectiveness of the advice provided by the Heart Foundation for maintaining a healthy weight. (2 MARKS).

Example AnswersThe following is a possible approach to answering this question: The advice is very general and a lot of extra information is needed to make choices as to what are healthier fats and oils, sugary, fatty and salty takeaway meals and snacks. You have to know what is a healthier fat or oil and may need to understand the differences between fats to help make a choice. Try to limit does not help you understand how to limit sugary, fatty foods. Many students were unable to provide a conclusion; many just described the advice provided by The Heart Foundation. Many students confused dietary advice with health advice but dietary advice was the core of the question. A conclusion could be made that restricting advice to diet does not recognise that physical exercise is also important for maintaining a healthy weight.
