COMMENTS:
Criterion: 2.A.11 b Documentation of criterion: The daily schedule, which provides time for a wide variety of experiences, including: art, circle time, gross motor play, outdoor time, and free time, allows children to explore new learning opportunities. The art and discovery table activities evolve from day to day throughout the week so the children have learning experiences that extend over a period of time.
The daily schedule is posted in more than one location in the classroom to remind teachers and students of the experiences the children should be receiving.
From left to right: Marlowe (29 months), Leo (13 months), and Reese (30 months) explored the various materials that were in the discovery table during color week.
Criterion: 2.G.01 a Documentation of criterion: The children are provided with many opportunities to go on field trips and nature walks. While engaging in these activities, the children have the opportunity to use their senses of smell, sight, and touch, and taste to learn about the their environment. By having both indoor and outdoor experiences, the children are able to use their senses in a variety of ways to learn about natural and manmade objects in their environment.
Everett (9 months) used his senses of touch and taste when shaking and chewing on a sensory bottle containing oil, water, glitter, and coloring.
Matthieu (32 months) used his senses of sight and touch when feeling the tree outside of the Child Study Center.
Criterion: 2.G.01 b Documentation of criterion: There are several toys and materials in our classroom that allow the children to explore cause-and effect relationships. The children are encouraged to experiment with these materials in order to learn problem solving for themselves rather than have an adult do everything for them.
Matthieu (32 months) and Anika (19 months) used problem-solving skills to manipulate the train track pieces in various ways until they properly fit together.
Matthieu (32 months) picked up the train cars and put them back together after they fell off the track.
Criterion: 2.J.02 a Documentation of criterion: The art center provides a consistent location with a wide variety of materials where the children can go in order to experiment with age-appropriate art. In addition, the teachers in the classroom intentionally plan art activities that provide opportunities for the children to use a wide variety of art materials.
The art center has numerous age-appropriate materials available to the children on a daily basis, including: markers, crayons, paper, tape, chalk, and stamping materials.
From left to right: Reese (30 months), Karson (18 months), and Marlowe (29 months) use pink and orange paint and paintbrushes to put color on a canvas. Anika (19 months) and Everett (9 months) use plastic tools to manipulate blue and green play dough.
Criterion: 3.B.11 c Documentation of criterion: Teachers in the classroom show enthusiasm and interest in childrens art. They use kind words and ask them to talk about their art instead of using negative words that lower childrens self-esteem. By showing this respect for all the childrens art, the children learn to be respectful of their friends.
Adults in the classroom showed interest by being attentive and smiling while Karson (18 months), Everett (9 month), and Leo (13 months) engaged in painting activities.
