Mission and Vision of SJPHS Breast Care Program

To Provide Breast cancer patients with access to the latest diagnostic technology, timely multidisciplinary treatment, supportive services that include financial, emotional, spiritual and survivorship care.

Executive Summary

As a market leader in Breast Services it is time for SJPHS to advance the current service line approach to focus on extending services across the continuum by providing a multidisciplinary Breast clinic at our 23 mile and Romeo Plank cancer center.

Demand for ambulatory cancer care will increase 15% over five years and 31% over the coming decade (Sg2, 2013)

SJPHS is well positioned for the changing health care landscape by its ability to demonstrate value with coordinated care via Breast navigators, coordinators, a comprehensive integrated database to monitor patient outcomes, and cost-effective care compared to the national benchmarks.

To expand outreach of our Multidisciplinary Breast Care program and clinic to 23 mile and Romeo Plank center.

Strategy

Offer a differentiating service to a market area with known population and business growth potential. Provide a robust multidisciplinary Breast program-led by Cheryl Wesen, MD.

Market Analysis

SJPHS serves the 5-county Southeast Michigan region with a population of 4.1 million, spanning 5 counties ( Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair and Livingston)

According to Truven (2013) Central and Northern Macomb County has a current population of 550, 449 with a projected population growth to 559,430 in 2018.

SJPHS currently has the building blocks of an expanded breast care program at our 23 mile and Romeo Plank location with a full range of Oncology services available i.e. mammography services, breast surgeons, medical oncology, radiation oncology and chemotherapy infusion centers.

STRENGTHS

Lack of integrated Breast reading stations. Lack of updated 3D breast imaging Tumor conference not available at 23 mile location Inability to provide video-conferencing of tumor conferences. Availability of Capital Dollars to provide build out for clinic area. Lack of area to provide upgraded breast services such as biopsy etc.

WEAKNESSES

Market growth potential Population continual growth Lack of formidable competitor that has a strong hold within the central and Northern Macomb market areas. Expand infusion center to include more chairs and influx of patients utilization. Lack of current multidisciplinary breast programs within this market areas.

OPPORTUNITIES

Unknown outcome of ACA enactment in January 2014 and continued economic conditions of Michigan areas. Competitors in talks to add 3D tomosynthesis units to existing mammography centers within the surrounding market area. Potential loss of patients to surrounding competitors. Ability to obtain capital funding for building out square footage

THREATS

Implementation Strategy

Develop team to include administration, clinical, IT and marketing staff to develop the plan, implementation and marketing of expanded program. Secure space to provide a multidisciplinary clinic within the current bricks and mortar location. Ensure all regulatory and legal obligations are being met with regard to Stark law , CMS requirements etc. Utilize current marketing programs , physician liaisons to get the word out to our PCPs, OB/GYNs and referring physicians regarding the expanded services within the Macomb Township site. Collaborate and engage Philanthropic support to assist us in meeting our goal to provide comprehensive breast services to the communities we serve.
