What is the Purpose of a Safety Filter?

At Donaldson we prefer to call it a safety lter

A safety lter backs up the primary (main) lter and protects the engine while the primary lter is out of the housing during service. The engine should never be run with only a safety lter in place. The safety is NOT a spare lter! Its purpose is to protect the engine if something goes wrong with the primary (main) lter. Until then, it quietly does its job.

Compared to a primary lter, the safety lter is more open for lower restriction and is less efcient. A safety element does not increase the overall operating efciency of an air cleaner.

A safety lter is there to protect the engine against hidden damage to a primary lter damage from cleaning, mis-installation, a will-t that doesnt quite t, or the installation of the wrong size lter. A safety lter is not to be used as a spare lter.
