Scavenger Hunt of Simple Machines

(A Moon Modification of PLTW Activity 1.1.1)

Greek mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and engineer Archimedes boasted, Give me a place to stand, and with a lever I will move the whole world.

Your world is full of simple machines that make life easy for you. You probably have not noticed most of them or thought about how much harder tasks would be without them. Therefore, we are going to explore our world and give simple machines the recognition they deserve! You must find at least seven different types of simple machines (out of the following list) to include in your scavenger hunt: Fixed Pulley First Class Lever Inclined Plane Wedge Movable Pulley Second Class Lever Screw Block and Tackle Third Class Lever Wheel and Axle

*Note: A compound machine is a great find and will satisfy multiple required types. Please take a photo of each underappreciated simple machine and then sketch (to scale) an annotated drawing that shows the parts and dimensions of each. (It may take more than one sketch to fully portray your simple machine.) Calculate the Ideal Mechanical Advantage, showing all formulas, units, and calculations. Cleary explain how each simple machine makes your life easier. Please use specific examples (with real-world forces / distances) in your explanations so the benefits of your finds can be fully realized even by a child. You will be assessed on: - How creative / unique your finds are - Accuracy and detail of annotated sketches (dimensions etc.) - Accuracy and detail of calculations - Creativity and Professionalism of your final product - How impactful your explanation / findings are

GO SCAVENGE !!! YEEEEHAW!
