ORTHODOX ASSOCIATIONS OF THE PENZA REGION
DURING THE POST-SOVIET PERIOD
After the section of the Penza diocese in the territory of the Penza region
remained 27 functioning temples and houses of worship. By 1999 their quantity increased to 150. In 1999 the number of priests in the Penza diocese seriously increased
and made 155 - priests and deacons, but it was still necessary for vigorous activity of
all arrivals of area 30 [1].
The organization of church management during the Post-Soviet period undergoes serious changes towards streamlining. As a part of the Penza diocesan management
six departments were created: religious education and katekhization, construction, missionary service, charity and social service, communications with military departments
and law enforcement agencies, editorial.
In Penza The center of orthodox culture functions. By the end of the
1990th in the region 40 Sunday schools worked. On October 23, 1998 the orthodox
gymnasium in Penza was open, and soon own building was provided to it. At many
Penza orphanages, boarding schools and nursing homes libraries of orthodox literature were organized.
Two times a week on regional radio the orthodox Sources broadcast sounded, on
local television there were religious programs Conversations about moral, Conversations of the very pastor, Conversations about religion. Since 1991 the Penzenskiye
Eparkhialnye Vedomosti newspaper again started being published. In 1998 the book The
List of Clergymen and Laymen of Russian Orthodox Church across the Penza Region,
Shot in the years of Mass Political Repressions was published.
The diocese signed contracts on cooperation by department with regional departments of education and social protection, oblzdravotdely, etc.; at three large medical
institutions there began the activity prayful rooms.
In all colonies of the Penza region specially equipped prayful rooms were organized.
On January 7, 1992 in the Penza region for the first time after the announcement of an orthodox holiday of Christmas in the day off festive celebrations took
place. On festive church service at the Uspensky cathedral there were heads of regional administration. On January 7 in art gallery of K.A. Savitsky the concert of city
chorus under the direction B.B. Kashirsky, executing chant of the Divine liturgy took

place [2].
Interaction of Church and society extended, accepting all new forms. So, at the
beginning of 1993 Tarasovs family from the Luninsky region of the Penza region transferred the privatization checks for temple restoration to the village Ivanyrs [3].
In the Penza region at this time representatives of administration are invited to
diocesan meetings. So, meeting of diocesan clergy where questions of a katekhization,
Sunday schools, neutralizations of activity of representatives of Protestant faiths and
other pseudo-religious sects were discussed on September 29, 1994 took place. The representative of regional administration V.S. Petrin who recommended to clergy to come
into contacts with administrations of areas participated in work of meeting [4].
In the 1990th new orthodox cult buildings in the Penza region are restored and
build up. In the region female monasteries, the Sacred and Tikhvin Kerensky a mans
monastery started functioning Narovchatsky Troitsk-Skanov and Penza Troitsk. Wide
preparatory work on opening of a mans monastery of the Vladimir icon of the Mother of

In 1992 Mikhail Arkhistratigas church in the village Lermontov started working. In 1994-1995 were shined wooden church to Akhunakh, the Blagoveshchensk

church service was resumed.
On the eve of the 1000 anniversary of acceptance of Christianity in Russia the
whole complex of cult buildings was transferred to the Penza diocese of Russian Orthodox Church. So, the resolution of the head of administration of the Penza region A.F.
Kovlyagina of March 25, 1997 . 261 About transfer to the Penza diocesan management
of Russian Orthodox Church of cult buildings and structures in the city of Penza on
which the Committee on management of the state property of the Penza region was recommended to transfer gratuitously to the possession of the Penza diocesan management
of Russian Orthodox Church the former hierarchal house was accepted. Administrations
of Zheleznodorozhny district the Old Savior was recommended to take measures for
transfer to the Penza diocesan management of the former temple and to render assistance in release of rooms both the adjacent territory and carrying out repair work. To
the chairman of Committee on Education, to culture and mass media it was offered to
carry out repair and restoration works in Preobrazhenskiy Church of Penza. Administrations of Penza and Leninsky district had to settle residents from the rooms belonging to
the Troitsk Female monastery, and from the building of the former monastic school for
creation in it a childrens shelter. Administrations of Penza and Oktyabrsky district were
offered to assist diocesan management in design and a laying of the Temple of Sacred
Peter and Pavel in Arbekovos residential district.
From the second half of the 1990th there is an active return to a diocese of subjects of an orthodox cult, a reburial local sacred, etc. In 1997 religious procession on transfer of the Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God from Penza in the Tikhvin mans monastery


again opened Kerensky took place.
In 1999 in Penza and area passed the festive events devoted to the 200 anniversary of formation of the Penza diocese on which there was Holy patriarch of Moscow and
all Russia Alex II.
This event partly served as an impulse to a reconstruction of Church and historical committee of the Penza diocese which purpose consisted in writing of full history
of the Penza diocese [5].
Thus, in the 1990th there are real changes in confessional practice and religious
policy. Weakening of the party and state control and refusal of the former principles of
the state and church relations at regional level gave opportunity to the local orthodox organizations to broaden the sphere of the influence that was expressed in integration and
streamlining of structure of a diocese, return of Russian Orthodox Church of churches
and construction of new temples, folding of system of orthodox education and education,
etc.
