Lesson Plan 1 Topic: Memory Year Level: 12 Learning Outcomes: Students are to develop an understanding in the following areas:

- Consolidation theory. - Memory decline over the lifespan. - Amnesia resulting from brain trauma and neurodegenerative diseases including dementia and Alzheimers disease. Introduction: Advise students of todays lesson and what will be covered: Homework: correct Focus on Research from page 96 SAM 4.1 (5 minutes) Recap of last lesson: HW will cover the recap of Consolidation/Consolidation Theory. Students will complete activity 4.2 Section A and B in class to recap what was learnt last lesson in relation to the healthy ageing brain (10 minutes complete and check answers) Discuss that last lesson involved looking at memory decline of a healthy ageing brain; however, today we are going to look at how memory is affected by disease or brain damage: -Amnesia caused by damage to brain -Neurodegenerative diseases Dementia Alzheimers Advise that the will have the last 25 minutes of the lesson to complete questions from the practice exam that relate to the chapter of Memory. Multiple choice answers will be given at end of class and they are to be handed up for marking of short answer questions. Body of Lesson: Power Point Presentation: Slide 52-53 Go through definitions and causes of amnesia in general. Organic causes: brain damage, Psychological causes: motivated forgetting/suppression/repression discuss that this cause will be explored in the next chapter of forgetting and advise students YouTube Clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tib66tgbq6Y 50 First dates (anterograde amnesia) (2.30 minutes) After Video: ask students what area of the brain they believe was damaged to cause the anterograde amnesia. Power Point Presentation: Slide 54-59 Neurodegenerative diseases: disease that gradually and progressively kill nerve cells, resulting in nervous system dysfunction and permanent loss of ability. Dementia: is a general term that describes the set of symptoms associated with progressive brain illnesses Alzheimers disease: irreversible, fatal, neurodegenerative disease that causes severe cognitive and behavioural decline. Damage usually begins in the hippocampus which is why this is associated with memory loss, however, Alzheimers also leads to decline in other areas as other brain areas are affected YouTube Clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1BkfV2h09g Alzheimers disease (3.20 minutes) Ask students: what symptoms they identified after watching this video and what things were said that indicated the presence of Alzheimers? Backup activities: Multiple choice questions in text book to be done in class and not homework. SAM 4.3/4.4 Revision time prior to exam questions

Assessment: Conclusion:

Checking previous homework is completed Practice Exam Multiple Choice and Short Answer Questions. Sum up the lesson: Amnesia: Retrograde/Anterograde Neurodegenerative Disease: Alzheimers HW: 4.3 SAM, 4.4 SAM Power Point Presentation Textbook and Workbook x3 YouTube clips.
