Lesson Plan 1 Topic: History: Ancient Civilisations.

Year Level: 7 Learning Outcomes: Students will have a solid understanding of primary and secondary resources as well as BCE and CE and will be able to provide examples. Students will be introduced to the topic of Ancient Egypt. They will begin to understand the geography of Ancient Egypt: where it is located on a map, how civilisation was developed and when, climate etc. Introduction: Advise students of what will occur during todays lesson and remind them of an upcoming test. Recap on previously learnt information of Primary and Secondary Resources. Teacher to have students volunteer what they remember about primary sources and request examples from different students. Teacher to do the same with secondary sources. Advise students that there will be a short quiz to test their knowledge of this information. (15 minutes). Ask students if any of this information is unclear and clarify any misunderstandings or confusions. Ask students to identify what BCE and CE mean and have different students come up to the board and plot different times on a timeline on the board (5 minutes)
Work book activity: Page 63: Primary and Secondary Resources (5 minutes)

Body of Lesson:

Introduce Ancient Egypt: Brainstorm activity: have students discuss with the students next to them what they already know about Ancient Egypt. Advise students that each group will be asked to provide different information to the class. Advise students that there is no right or wrong answer as this activity is used to identify what students already know vs. what they dont know. Teacher to write answers up on the board (10 minutes). Map: Provide map of the world and have students attempt to identify where Egypt is on this map. Advise students to stick this into their book as they will refer back to this map later in the unit when learning about other civilisations (2-3 minutes). Textbook: Pages 112113 How do we know about Ancient Egypt, have students volunteer to read sections of this. Ask students what type of historian they think has discovered some of the primary

sources of Ancient Egypt: archaeologists. Discuss the role of an archaeologist and go over definition.
Pages 114 115 The gift of the Nile: Have students read this and discuss the climate and land. Have students answer questions from activities on this page. (20 minutes)

Assessment:

- Walking around the room and ensuring students are on the right track in their activities. - Having students contribute their answers to the group and clarifying any misunderstandings. - Answering student questions. -Quiz Sum up what was learnt in todays class. Advise what will be discussed next lesson: The people of Egypt and daily life. Provide homework to students: Definitions for glossary: Map x28 Text book and work book Whiteboard markers Power point slide show
