ST. GEORGES COLLEGE GEOMETRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DRAWING Problem Sheet #1 ----CENTROIDS 1.

A T-shaped piece of metal of uniform thickness has a cross-piece 100mm x 30mm and a stem 140mm x 25mm. Determine the distance of the centroid from the top edge of the T-piece. 2. An L-shaped piece of steel plate of uniform thickness can be divided into two rectangles, each 60mm x 20mm. Determine the distances of the centroid position from the left-hand and bottom edges, respectively, of the L-piece. 3. A rectangle, 90mm x 60mm, is cut from a thin rectangular plate, 100mm x 70mm, to form an Lsection, the width of the legs being 10mm. Determine the centroid position of the L-section. 4. A sheet of metal, 400mm square has centre lines drawn on it parallel to the sides. A circle, 250mm diameter, is cut out of the square, the centre of the circle lying on one side of the centre lines of the square. Determine the distance between the centres of the square and of the circle if the centroid of the remaining plate is 30mm from the centre of the square. 5. A hole having a diameter of 80mm is cut from a uniform plate of 250mm diameter. The distance between the centre of the plate, and the centre of the hole is 50mm. Calculate the position of the centroid of the remaining material. 6. Determine the position of the centroid of the section, from the bottom edge, shown in fig.1 below.
