This is a new and exciting course that will allow you to study one A Level in the area of Science.

Course Content
The 6 Unit course offers a qualification equal in rigour, status and content to one full A Level. The varied programme of study takes place over a two year period, enabling you to acquire knowledge and understanding of the scientific ideas and skills that scientists need in order to be effective in their work and to apply this in a variety of vocational contexts. In the first year of the course you will study: Unit 1: Fundamentals of Science If you wish to pursue a career in science you will need a general understanding of all the main sciences and how to carry out basic practical techniques. These include handling and setting up laboratory apparatus, carrying out risk analysis, safely following laboratory procedures and processes and analysing data. You will also need to develop communication skills in order to record information using subjectspecific terminology. Successful completion of this unit should develop your underlying skills in simulating work which is carried out by science technicians in order to enable you to work effectively in industry and in analytical services. Unit 2: Working In the Science Industry You will develop the skills that an employee in the science industry needs to be an effective, efficient and safe member of a team. You will learn about relevant communication methods, how laboratories are designed, how information is stored in laboratory information management (LIMS) and how to work safely in a scientific workplace. Unit 4: Scientific Practical Techniques You will become familiar with a range of practical techniques used in science including the analysis of materials, the separation of substances and the use of instruments/sensors, together with the need to work safely and accurately. The properties of materials are important, when scientists undertake investigations, they need to identify the substances they are working with therefore you will gain experience of both qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis

In the second year of the course you will study:

Unit 11: Physiology of Human Body Systems Unit 13: Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques Unit 43: Diseases and Infections

Assessment
All units are coursework based assessments. The grading system converts the total mark to grades from Pass to Merit to Distinction, depending upon the overall score that you achieve. This is a very practical approach to the subject in which you will become skilful in carrying out practical techniques and following procedures used in vocational contexts. You will also develop knowledge and understanding of the science used by organisations, business and industry. Throughout the course you will develop skills in the areas of primary research, planning, data collection, analysis and evaluation

Progression
The BTEC Applied Science will facilitate progression to Higher Education, for degree and professional development programmes such as Advanced or Higher Apprenticeships within the same or related areas of study in Universities and other institutions.

Student Comment
Im glad I switched from A levels in Biology and Chemistry to BTEC Applied Science. Im really enjoying the practical work and Ive realised that I will get far more points for University with BTEC than I ever would struggling with A level exams. Im aiming for Distinctions.
