Kerryn Dornan Philosophy of Education Teaching should not just be a job, but something that is taken home as well.

School districts and parents ha e gi en us the responsibility of teaching their children. !s teachers we need to get to know our students at a professional le el, but also a personal one. There can be things going on at home that could make teaching difficult that day. " would also like to know when my students are acting different than normal, " will be able to recogni#e that and accommodate them. Knowing when they are being different will only come by creating relationships with them. $hen students come through my classroom door " want them to feel comfortable because that will translate into their learning. %y classroom will be pluralist rather than assimilated. $hile it might be easier to pretend like all my students are the same, it will not help my teaching or help them learn. !ll of my students are uni&ue, as they come from different cultures, lifestyles and neighborhoods. The kids will come to my room wit their own uni&ue lessons from life and add it to our own classroom culture. Through their peers eyes, the students can add to classroom discussion in a way that te'tbooks and lecture cannot. "t is important to remember how important e ery student is when dealing with the difficult ones. (o teacher should lea e them behind, but prop them up because they can bring something great to class. Teaching should also be about ha ing fun. $hen " put together a lesson plan " want to also be e'cited about it. )f course as a teacher you need o be e'cited about the content, but it is also about how you teach it. The content needs to be con eyed using

more than just powerpoint and lecture. Powerpoints are useful for learners who absorb the content easily, but it is more difficult for others. *roup and partner acti ities are a good way to spread the content around, instead of a static presentation. The learning will come with a well planned lesson that reaches all students. "t is just as important that the teaching be e'citing as the learning. +a ing students watch powerpoints, listen to lecture, read the te'tbook and watch mo ies are not fun. The students will be in ol ed in my classroom. " imagine student group or partner acti ities that are aimed at them teaching the class the main points of the lesson rather than myself. The students might not understand the way " e'plain something, but through each other the informational pu##le might come together. The learning in my classroom will also be interacti e, by using technology. Technology can be used to help support the lessons being taught. The students will ne er stop thinking about the content because we will always be mo ing. %y lesson plans will not go unchanged e ery year because like my students, " will be constantly learning and changing as well. !s a teacher you ha e to be willing to go with the flow. ,esson plans are meant to be changed to make room for ideas that came to you right before bed or on the way to work. " will also make room in my lessons for thing that my students ha e taught me. E ery one has a different perspecti e or different ways at answering &uestions. Those new perspecti es can be great for constructing or tweaking lessons. " see learning and teaching as one entity because you ne er stop learning and that is seen by the way one teaches.
