WHAT IS IS POETRY?
Is poetry is a student guided approach to writing reflection in the content areas. Is poetry is easily adaptable for both young and older children. Is poetry can be narrow or broad in topic with the content areas
For example: students can write about something as specific as a shape, or an entire mathematical concept.
A circle is OR Geometry is
Is poetry is a great way for students to summarise thoughts and information in relation to the topic. (Altieri, 2011, p.232)
RATIONALE
As an English teacher, I do not teach content subjects currently, but as the head of my phase I know my students weakest area is mathematics!
For this strategy I would like to coordinate across disciplines with the mathematics teacher and target a mathematical concept my students are currently working on. For example, my Grade 6s are currently dealing with Geometry.
TEACHING PLAN
I would select the broad topic for the poem of geometry. Together, with my students we would brainstorm a list of geometric terminology they have learned and create words to explain these terms.
For example: rotation turning a shape on a specific point or reflection creating a mirror image that changes depending on the mirror line without changing shape or size
After brainstorming, we would create a class poem and read it aloud. The class poem would then be discussed in relation to quality versus quantity of words.
GEOMETRY IS

Choose to work independently to create a geometry is poem Work with the teacher in a small group if they are stuck Students will share completed Geometry is poems aloud with peers. Students will be allowed to illustrate poems with geometric representations if they so wish. **a list of possible topic choices within Geometry will be made available for students who are struggling to pick a topic
