DRUG

Generic Name: Mannitol Brand Name: Osmitrol Classification: Osmotic Diuretic Route: IVTT Dosage: 250mg, then 100mg IVTT every 6hrs. Frequency: 4hrs

Indications
Reduction of intracranial pressure and treatment of cerebral edema; of elevated IOP when the pressure cannot be lowered by other means.

Mechanism of Action
Elevate the osmolarity of the glomerular filtrate,thereby hindering the reabsorption of water and leading to a loss of water,sodium chloride, creates an osmotic gradient in the eye between plasma and ocular fluids,thereby reducing IOP,creates an osmotic effect,leading to decreased swelling in postranurethral prostatic resection.

Contraindication
Use cautiously with pulmonary congestion, active intracranial bleeding, dehydration, renal disease, heart failure.

Adverse reaction
CNS: Dizziness, headache,blurred vision,seizures. CV: Hypotension, hypertension, edema, heart failure,thrombophleb itis,tachycardia,chest pain.

Nursing Responsibility
Do the 10 rights of administering the drug. Observed IV site frequently for infiltration. Prepared the drug at room temperature. Take blood pressure before administering the drug. Provided oral care Explain adverse reactions for the significant other. Monitored Intake and Output of the patient.
