Dorothy Lin Kristen Foster CO 150. 401 Oct. 23th, 2013 Problems Caused by International Students An Annotated Bibliography Critical Preface These days, it is easier and easier to find Chinese and Saudis students on campus. This is the reason which catalyzed my interests in exploring the increasingly hot and controversial topic of students overseas studying. With the development of globalization, there are more and more students choose studying abroad to continue their studies. For me, as a Chinese student, studying abroad is a very diverse and professional choice which has some significant benefits, for example, many foreign universities offer variety of majors in plenty of academic fields where China has no experience or not generally recognized, therefore, I would have chance to learn more advanced knowledge through my overseas studying. However, issues that followed by the increasing number of international students are increasingly serious, such as the maladjustment of new cultural environment and some mental problems triggered by isolation. As one of the international students, this topic is very important and pertinent to me. To further examine this issue, I investigated a research question: Are there any problems that international students have and should students do an overseas study to meet their purpose of obtaining a higher academic degree? Between the dates of October 3rd, 2013 and October 20th, 2013, I conducted the research that appears in this annotated bibliography. There are four

sources with different types I will mention here, one of them is an academic article published in a peer-reviewed journal, the other is a survey about international students needs and difficulties from a database. The two remaining sources are both articles from popular newspaper and journal (U.S. News and CCSE Journal), which I found online. These sources all help me to have a better understanding towards my initial research question. Annotated Bibliography Abrahao, Andre de Araujo. Adjustment Issues of International Students Enrolled in American Colleges and Universities. CCSE Journals, 1 March, 2011. Web. 14 Oct. 2013. In this article is a review of the literature, which written for its audiences who may concerned about international students difficulties. The author sheds light on that indicated that English fluency, social support, length of stay in the U.S., perceived discrimination or prejudice, establishing relationships with Americans, and homesickness were the most significant variables related to the adjustment of international students (5). This is reliable source because it was published in CCSE Journals, who provides programs to support and promote education and research development, including educational programs for students, financial support for researchers, international education projects, and scientific publications (Home). In this article, Abrahao does an in-depth analysis which includes introduction, context, the literature review, findings from the literature review, synthesis: limitations and suggestions for future research, and conclusion. The author also supports with different data to increase his credibility. On the one hand, this source provides the information about what kinds of issues that international students may face when they try to integrate into a new social, the other hand, it helps me to

make a reply that how these adjustments issues influence one of the stakeholders---international students behavior and how these behavior cause problems in their lifes. Choi, Serene H.-J., and Timo A. Nieminen. "Factors Influencing the Higher Education Of International Students From Confucian East Asia." Higher Education Research & Development 32.2 (2013): 161-173. Academic Search Premier. Web. 21 Oct. 2013. In this essay written for people who are interested in studying abroad or educational system in East Asia, the authors states a different cultural background in East Asia compared with Australia in order to improve the quality of international education in Australia. Choi points out because of the traditional education concept of Confucian, peoples position in society and employment opportunities are affected by the higher education in East Asia. Choi also advocates that successfully entered this university for students' future career is not only an important achievement for themselves, but also their familys victory. This background highly affects East Asian students, who tend to have an international education, and success with the corresponding high expectations. I believe this source is credible because the article was published as a peer-reviewed article in The Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia, which is a scholarly society for people committed to the advancement of higher and tertiary education. It promotes the development of higher education policy, practice and the study of teaching and learning (2). Whats more, the author is a person who with a high education background in School of Mathematics and Physics, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia (Serene Choi). factors affect stakeholders to make the choice of an overseas education.

In addition, the article focuses on primary research where hundreds of international students were surveyed and all of them did experiment set by the researchers. Whats more, the authors use a variety of data analysis methods to make this article easier to understand and more reliable. However, the limitation of the research is: the participants are all from one college, which do not have sufficient representation of all international students. The source provides the plenty of data about international students needs and difficulties they would have during their studies, it gives me a clear impression about different percentage and data towards overseas studying problems, and helps me do a better analyze to my research problem. It also provides a reference for one of stakeholders in this topic: the students who want to choose study abroad to obtain a higher academic degree.
