binders MONDAY. Thursday!!!

tkimmel@khps.org

I am really excited to let you know that I, along with another first grade teacher,

Mrs. Merryman, have worked to develop a student sharing program using our same math program and curriculum that all of the other first grades are using, but have made adaptations to suit our student's needs." ! Although the information is EXACTLY the same, the class and the structure of the class will be different. One class will be a bit faster paced, and will include extensions and "various applications of the material learned. This is to prevent boredom for children who are catching on to certain concepts, and to allow them to excel at their own pace, following our RISC model, and our Journey to Excellence." The other class will be paced slower, according to the needs of the group, will have more time to complete activities, and will also have more hands on activities and visual aids to assist in their learning. This will prevent students from getting lost, and will allow them to feel successful, instead of always playing catch up. They may also have a reduced work load. We are going to work on quality over quantity. As their pace, stamina, and knowledge increases, more may be required of them. WE know that this will help our students achieve and learn in a more optimal environment. Groups are based on academic data, and teacher observation. WE also want parents to understand that these are flexible groups, your student may be in one classroom for one Unit and moved to another for the next. It depends on the child, the Unit, and how YOUR child learns. Mrs. Merryman and I will be conferencing frequently to make sure your child is comfortable and is in the best place for their success. The children are aware that this does not mean they are not better or worse that other students, there is not a smart or struggling class. This has been presented to them as a fun way to learn with new friends, and they have been told that they may be moved to make sure that they are in a "good fit" classroom, and that they may change throughout the year, this in no way is a punishment or a reward. As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding this program. As always, I appreciate your support with this program and all we do here at Central Elementary. Warmly, Theresa Kimmel
