What do they do? What would a typical day on the job look like?

Filmmaking (often referred to film production) is the process of making a film. Filmmaking involves a number of stages including an initial story, idea through scriptwriting, casting, shooting, editing, and screening the finished product before an audience that may result in a film release. The director is primarily responsible for the storytelling, creative decisions and acting of the film.

A directors workday varies considerably since the filmmaking process is made of scripting, production and editing. Once production on the film begins, directors not only manage the cast, getting the best performances out of the actors as possible, but also the technical aspects such as the shot composition, sound, lighting, design and special effects departments, approving every single shot.

(Hours you can expect to work? Risk of injuries? Time of day/time of year? Indoors/outdoors? Clothing required?
It has said to be that 20 hours day is not unusual. Film directing is a year round process and job; it includes indoor and outdoor work as well as travelling.

What do you expect to earn?

Film directors working in professional productions earn salaries based on the type of production and the number of weeks on the job. Films, classified as low or high budget, shorts or documentaries, earn different pay. Highbudget films have budgets more than $11 million. Directors working a week on a high-budget film earned a minimum of $16,508 in 2012, while a week on a short or documentary paid $11,791. When the film takes more than the week, directors on high-budget productions earned $4,127 daily pay. Short and documentary film directors took home $2,948 for a day of work in 2012. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported in May 2011 that film directors earned an annual mean wage of $115,920.

A-list directors earn millions in salaries, and film directors combining directing talents with producing and writing duties earn even more. George Lucas, for instance, took home more than $170 million in 2008 with the release of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," according to "Forbes." Tyler Perry took the reins as director, producer, writer and star of several films during 2009 and took home $75 million as his annual income that year.

Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time with the runner up being Titanic. Both of these films were directed by Academy Award winner, James Cameron.

Will this job be demanding, why or why not?

This job will be demanding in the future because it does take a lot of time, with travel and the process of making a film. School will take up time and money, but in the end it is all worth it. To me, it does not matter how demanding it is because it is a passion of mine and I would enjoy going to work every day.

Post-Secondary Institute/Training
Many film directors have visited a film school to "get formal training and education in their craft". Film students generally study the basic skills utilized in making a film. This includes, for example, preparation, shot lists and storyboards, blocking, protocols of dealing with professional actors, and reading scripts. Some film schools are equipped with sound stages and post-production facilities. Besides basic technical and logistical skills, students also receive education on the nature of professional relationships that occur during film production. A full degree course can be designed for up to five years of studying. Future directors usually complete short films during their enrolment.

I am interested in film directing because it has always been one of my greatest passions. Ever since I was a toddler I have always had a love for movies. As I grow older, I now have a greater appreciation, not only for films, but also the process in how they are made. It would make me happy to wake up everyday and create something original and test my creativity and imagination.
