At the glance of the Suns tiny beacon of light, an abandoned child awoke in his dusty and filthy bed, as his eyes filled with anxiety and fear. He got up, aware that he will experience the pain and agony of the torment and torture again for he had not been mindful of his sleep. Rodney slowly walked through the darkness, following the Suns pea-sized ray of light through the unbreathable dust in the miniature tent he rests in since his dark, hazy memory of his parents abandoned him in a refugee camp. Although the sea of sorrowful memories flooded Rodney, he wasnt regretful of that very moment he became an orphan, as he recognised that he used to live in the red and black warzone back in Iraq. He now stays in another Iraq family in southern Vietnam, near the coast after successfully fleeing Iraq. Look whos had a good nights sleep! Rodney looked up and saw his stepfather and his stepbrother mocking at him. Get back to work laddie! Rodney tried to thrust his way outside but then a piercing and swift WHACK! Impaled Rodneys left leg, leaving Rodney limping. Rodney however, did not mind the throbbing as he has experienced worse. The Suns fiery rays of light melts down in the horizon sluggishly as Rodney limped forward, listening the nefarious scorns and insults about the government in Iraq. Rodney soon arrived at his stepparents house; inaudible murmurs caught Rodneys attention. The gloomy darkness inside his stepparents house was silent; he limped forwards until he reached a candle-lit room. He limped into the room, no-one was there; Rodney was confused, just then all the lights turned on. Uh-oh, Rodney thought to himself. He took a glance backwards and saw his stepbrother Ali. Over the weeks Rodney spent most of his time working for his stepparents, hearing clinks and clanks all day from the metal scraps which hung on a rope tied around his neck. In each one of his steps, the rope becomes tighter and tighter. Rodney was fed-up; he had so wished that he was liberated from all the unescapable jobs he had to do, free from the vile consequences he had to suffer. Rodney was again thinking about his parents, and again the grief-stricken reminiscences came to his mind, fading in a minute of regret as he looked at the blackish bruise that he received earlier in the morning. Back in his dusty tent, he had a plan of leaving with some other orphans and two male adults, so they decided that they must leave, with everything they can bring with them in their suitcases. They had to go over to the coast of Vietnam in the blackness of the midnight with only the moons light to rely on. Knowing that the trip would be perilous, they rode a tiny boat which was only meant to carry rice. All of the refugees except Rodney and one of the adults scrambled into one boat leaving Rodney and a man named Kali in another rice boat.

Kali rushed over to the other boat, while Rodney followed. Youre lucky that youve got an adult with you! Kali was a tall man, he seemed like he was rough and tough too. He had a very deep voice that scared Rodney at the start, but then he got used to it because of the 1-month journey they had until they found land. They arrived in an unknown island. Nothing there but coconut trees and a few different types of shrubs and other exotic plants theyve never seen before. Where are we? Rodney asked anxiously as he looked at the silky white sand. How am I supposed to know? Kali again, talking in his scary deep voice.. After 3 weeks of surviving the unknown island, they heard a noise. A noise that that definitely sounded like one of the helicopters they saw from the war in Iraq. KID, WE GOTTA RUN! Kali seemed he was petrified of the helicopter, but as Rodney and Kali ran out of their tent, the helicopter landed and the people on the helicopter and took them inside. When they woke up, they found themselves in a wide building with many people everywhere. Kali sobbed, Were going in the war now! KALI!!!! A screaming voice caught Kalis attention. An elderly woman ran towards Kali; a woman who most likely would be his mother. Kali soon joined his family, leaving 12-year old Rodney alone. For around 7 years, Rodney has been waiting for the processing system to finish getting him a VISA. He finally started a new life in Newcastle, Sydney when he was 21. Every day, still, the sea of sorrowful memories flooded Rodney, although he would never regret that striking moment when his parents died because of his new family.
