M.Tech - II Semester Supplementary April/May 2012 Examinations (for students admitted in 2010-11 only) EXPERIMENTAL GEO-MECHANICS
(Geotechnical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks ***** 1. (a) (b) What is the purpose of soil exploration? Explain the various stages in the sub-surface exploration. Explain and discuss the various factors that help in deciding the number and depth of bore holes required for sub-soil exploration. Write short notes on (a) Anger borings (b) Wash borings and (c) Rotary drilling. (a) (b) Max. Marks: 60

4.

Why are undisturbed samples required? The inner diameters of a sampling tube and that of cutting edge are 70 mm and 68 mm respectively. Their outer diameters are 72 mm and 74 mm respectively. Determine the inside clearance, outside clearance and area ratio of the sampler. Describe with a neat sketch split-spoon sampler.

5. 6.

Describe the standard penetration test used in sub-soil exploration. List the information that can be obtained by the test when made in clay and sand. Describe the plate load test. In what way, it is useful in foundation design. (a) (b) Under what circumstances geophysical methods are used in sub-soil exploration. A seismic refraction study of an area has given the following data:
Distance of shock point to geophone (m) Time to receive wave (s)
