Mayra & Daniela

She is an American dancer & choreographer, born on July 2nd, 1941 in Portland, Indiana, USA. She currently lives in New York City. She is 72 years old, and still has her own company where she still choreographs. As a child, Tharp danced jazz, tap dance, ballet & modern. She also played all sorts of instruments such as piano, drum, viola and violin. She studied English, German & French. She was in a family of 6, including her. ( 1 sister, 2 brothers)

Tharps parents opened a drive in movie theater, and that was where she started working at the age of 8. Her parents always encouraged her to work with arts ever since a little girl. She then attended Vera Lynn School of Dance. She had almost no social time because she was always busy learning new things got to do with dance, and music. When she was transferred to Barnard College in New York, she graduated with an Art History degree in 1963. She then studied with a lot of other famous dancers such as Richard Thomas, Martha Graham & Merce Cunningham. Later that year she joined Paul Taylor Dance Company.

Tharps first choreographed dance was only years after she had joined dance business professionally, Tank Dive. A year after that, in 1966 she formed her own company Twyla Tharp Dance. The years were very busy and successful for Tharp. She started to perform internationally from 1971-988. In 1988 she merged with American Ballet Theatre, which held 16 of her best pieces. She choreographed for companies such as:
Paris Opera Ballet The Royal Ballet New York City Ballet Boston Ballet Joffrey Ballet Pacific Northwest Ballet Miami City Ballet Hubbard Street Dance Martha Graham Dance Company

One of Tharps biggest influences were that she had pressure from her parents ever since was a little girl to do many type of arts, and that was a good influence on her because she did so many arts such as music, theatre & dance which made her connect more with dance because when you are dancing to a song, and you have an emotion you need to feel the song and you have to have a certain emotion when dancing so that it the audience forgets you and looks at the character dancing and the reason Tharp could do that is because she did it ever since a little girl which only added onto her extremely amazing talent.

"Art is the only way to run away without leaving home. Twyla Tharp

Twyla Tharps is now 72, and she is no longer as flexible and as active as she was 20 years ago, of course. She has taught for several years, most of her life. She still teaches, but her dancers from ages ago who are now successful in life and are choreographers started off with little kids, and it Twyla Tharp's dance has became a legacy because her students teach their students, and their students teach their students, and so on, so on. Until today people that dont dance for Tharp are learning her dance, and she is more than okay with it.

Deuce Corpe, is the first crossover ballet and it was by Twyla Tharps.

It

influenced our dance because Twyla Tharps does this thing where she does several moves, to prove a point. She doesnt move on to the next chapter quickly, she will do different moves to prove her point, and that gave us the idea to have many people bully me in our dance piece Breath Me by Sia, to show how badly I am suffering, and need help and that bullying is actually a problem.
