Big Ideas: History: Students will learn the history of the game volleyball. Rules: Students will learn the rules of the game so they can successfully play. Positions: Students will learn the positions on the court and the roles that those positions play.

Skills: Students will learn skills such as serving, hitting, bumping, setting, and blocking. Strategy: Students will learn basic offensive and defensive strategies used in the game. Unit Goals and Objectives: Objectives 1. Students will be able to state two ways they used object manipulation skills during the activity. 2. Students will be able to give examples of 1 offensive and 1 defensive strategy used while playing the game. 3. Students will be able to express their passion for playing the game. Goals 1. Students will perform all 5 skills with involving the 4 critical elements for each. 2. Students will gain knowledge about the history, rules, and lingo of the game. 3. Each student will find an aspect of the game that they enjoy. Unit Summary: This unit will enlighten students on how to strike, bump, set, serve and block a volleyball with correct technique. The students will learn the rules of volleyball and how the game is played. Each student should be able to demonstrate proper positioning and strategy on the volleyball court. After this unit is complete the students should be confident in playing a beginning level volleyball game. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: During the entry level portion of the unit you will be asked to complete an object manipulation worksheet. This worksheet can only be completed after viewing the presentation.

Formative: Through-out the unit you will be completing the following assignments. The webquest assignment allows you to view different sources when expanding your knowledge on the sport. Don't forget to fill out the worksheet while you are browsing the sites. The Critical Elements worksheet is one of the most important assignments. This is an outline of your physical assessment rubric. You will also have to fill in worksheets on the history, rules and lingo of volleyball. During the entry level portion of the unit you will be asked to complete an object manipulation worksheet.

Summative: At the end of the unit students will be asked to take a quiz, which will assess their knowledge on the information. Students will be able to demonstrate the 5 skills of volleyball properly by performing the 4 critical elements for each. Finally to conclude the unit, students will play a basic game of volleyball to demonstrate their skills

This worksheet can only be completed after viewing the presentation. Volleyball Skills graphic organizer is worth 20 points. Each correct critical element is worth one point. History is worth 9 points. Each question is worth 2 points. Rules is worth 9 points. Each question is worth 1 point. Lingo! Lingo is worth 12 points. One point for each element.

Acceptable Evidence: If the students are able to fill out the worksheet correctly, they will have met both objectives.

Lesson Activities: Students will view a sliderocket presentation on the history, rules, and the game of volleyball. (http://portal.sliderocket.com/DDJGX/edsc-304) After viewing the presentation students will fill out a worksheet on what they learned. As a class, we will discuss the notes and go over any questions the students have. Once we go over the assignment we will practice the skills of volleyball. Go over critical elements of bumping and setting then practice them.

Acceptable Evidence: If students are able to correctly fill out the worksheet that followed along with the websites then they will have met the two objectives stated.

Lesson Activities: This lesson is a webquest assignment. (http://zunal.com/tasks.php?w=213296) Students will have to click on websites and read the pages to answer the questions on the worksheet. By the end of the lesson discuss the history of volleyball, identify the rules that go along with the game, list the positions and discuss their role in the game, identify the skills used in volleyball and know when to apply them in the game, and compare offensive and defense and describe different strategies for each. Once we go over the assignment we will practice the skills of volleyball. Reinforce bumping and setting and teach serving, hitting and blocking.

Acceptable Evidence: If the students are able to correctly fill in the graphic organizers then they have met the top two objectives. When the students are playing the modified game and they are enjoying themselves I will have met the third objective.

Lesson Activities: In this activity we will be filling in graphic organizers to further enhance our knowledge of volleyball. The students will click on the corresponding links to fill in the graphic organizers. Each one has a different purpose. Once we are completed with this activity we would reinforce all 5 skills by practicing in modified games.
