Topic: Setting using context clues and visualization

Connection to Prior Knowledge: Discuss five senses with students and explain how they can be used to determine setting in a text. Pre-assessment: Discuss setting to determine how many students are already familiar with story settings. Procedure: 1. Students will sit on carpet in front of easel and teacher will model how to use clues, in a text, based upon the five senses to determine setting. She will read aloud Glorias Walk and make an anchor chart of the five senses. 2. Story will be displayed on the Smartboard so clues can be highlighted and then added to anchor chart next to corresponding sense. 3. Students will then work in pairs, with the story Rainy Day, to determine setting, and make their own chart. 4. Teacher will lead whole class discussion asking for clues they found and highlight on the Smartboard. 5. Students will then independently complete activity Figuring Out the Setting. Formative Assessment: Formative assessment will be review of the final activity, which students complete independently.
