Unit 3 Chemistry - Types of Chemical Reaction Lab Directions: For each reaction do the following #1-5: 1.

Perform each reaction 4. classify the type of reaction 2. record your observations, 5. balance equation with states. 3. take pictures for the blog A. Obtain Silver Nitrate and small 50mL beaker. Place a small string of copper into the beaker and then pour the silver nitrate solution over the copper until it is at least halfway covered by solution. 2. The copper dissolved the silver out of the silver nitrate solution, which made silver atoms. The electrons from the copper were given to the silver atoms and then the copper joined with the nitrate solution to make 1M Copper (II) Nitrate. The solution became cloudy. 3. Pics

4. Single Displacement Reaction 5. 2 AgNO3 (aq) + Cu (s) == Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + 2 Ag (s)

B. - Obtain a 50mL beaker, pour about 20mL of D.I. water and a few drops of Phenolphthalein to it, record the pH. - Add about 5.0 mL of 1M NaOH, record the pH w/ pH meter & litmus paper, also test it for electrolytes w/conductivity apparatus. - Wash off the conductivity & pH sensor with D.I. water after you use it or it will corrode!!! - Put a thermometer in the beaker and add 5.0 mL of 2M HCl to the beaker , and measure pH & conductivity & temperature change. 2. D.I. water and phenolphthalein: pH - Between 5 and 6. After adding 1M NaOH: pH - 14 , and it is conductive After adding 2M HCl: Temperature Change: Start - 24, End - 24, pH = 1, Conductivity = It was conductive 3. Pics

4. Neutralization Reaction , Double Replacement 5. NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) == NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)

C. Pour a small scoop of CaCO3 (about 1-2 grams) into the same beaker from the reaction in section B. 2. Fizzes and Bubbles. No Precipitate formed. 3. Pics

4. Decomposition 5. CaCO3 (aq) + 2HCl (aq) === CaCl2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l) D. Obtain a shiny piece of copper and a pair of tongs, hold the piece of copper up to a flame with tongs. 2. The piece of copper burned bright yellow when in the flame and even became white when it was in the flame for a long time. When taken out of the flame, the piece of copper was black. 3. Pics

4. Synthesis 5. 2Cu+ O2 2CuO

E. Place a small scoop (about 2 grams) of sucrose (C12H22O11) into a crucible and heat it over Bunsen burner. 2. The sugar bubbles and then turns black. 3. Pics

4. Single Replacement 5. C12H22O11+ 12O2 12Co2 +11H2O

F. Observe the burning Bunsen Burner. 2. The Bunsen burner produces a blue flame with it lighter on the inside of the flame. 3. Pics

4. Combustion

5. 2C3H8(g)+3O2(g) 3CO2(g)+8H2(g)

G. Pour Sodium Iodide into a test tube with around 20mL of DI water. Add Lead (II) Nitrate to the test tube. 2. The solution turned yellow when the Lead (II) Nitrate was added. It was a precipitant. 3. Pics

4. Double Displacement, precipitation reaction 5. NaI (aq) + PbNO3 (aq) === 2NaNO3 (aq) + PbI (aq)
