Lesson Title: Grade Level: Subject:

Happenings of a Cell 7 Cellular structure and function.

Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives

Prerequisites:

Students should have prior knowledge of what a cell is, where it is located, and that all living things are made up of cells.
CC/GPSs:

S7L2 Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs and organ systems B. Relate cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria) to basic cell functions.
National Technology Standards:

3.Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: b. locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. At the end of this unit student will be able to identify the major organelles and their primary functions. They will also be able to read and understand what necessary information for a specific question is.
Given a presentation and assigned readings on cellular structure and function, the student will take a quiz on cellular structure and function, and will complete a cellular organelle identification handout with a score of a minimum of 70% on both.

Long-Term Learning Goal or Outcome:

ABCD Objectives or Outcomes:

Description of Assessment
Assessment Plan: Students will be given an online quiz and graded out of 20 points. Students must score a minimum of 70% of those points to be considered proficient in this subject.

Description of Activities with Technology and Materials

Activity Design: Students will follow the Prezi presentation in class and will fill out a handout that requires them to identify the cells structures. They will then watch a short 8min video on cellular structures in cell. They will then be required to take the online

Class starter and lesson connection:

assessment. Class will start out with Q & A about students knowledge of what a cell is and where it is located and what is comprised of cells. Teacher will discuss that cells are the most basic unit of life and that all living things are composed of cells

Teacher and student activities: Teacher will begin with a Q & A session with students on their basic understanding of a cell. Teacher will discuss what a cell is and that all living things are made up of cells. Teacher will then explain that cells are most basic unit of life and where it falls in the organization of life. Teacher will then describe what a cell is comprised of. Teacher will hand out an assignment Cell Structure to the class to fill in as the lecture takes place, students will turn in completed sheet at end. Teacher will explain directions of assignment (i.e. students must identify structures indicated on handout and turn in completed sheet) Teacher will then facilitate the Prezi presentation then show the 8 min video on organelle structures in the cell. Teacher will then allow students to use a computer to complete the online quiz. Students must attain a 70% for a completion grade. Technology Connection: Teacher will present the Prezi presentation in class on a computer Projector, but will give students access links for outside the classroom use. Teacher will print off Cell Structure handout for students. Students will work independently to take the quiz online. For students that cannot use or handle computers printed handouts of the quiz will be given for evaluation of students.

Narrow keywords when searching for quiz and polling tools. I would add more audio and video to my Prezi if more time was available and would be able to learn pretty up my presentation with more time spent exploring the Prezi software. My presentation allows for students to remain focused with the technique changing media types/information outlets throughout lesson. The quiz I made requires the student to use multiple critical thinking techniques. This is because the quiz is not just one type of question, by mixing the questions up with T/F, Multiple choice, Fill-in and Matching students have to remain focused throughout quiz and must really read the question to understand what its asking for. The video presented in my Prezi gives the student a real time picture of how these organelles are structured in the cell. It provides movement and actions that a 1D picture cannot show. This makes the functions that these organelles do more memorable if the student can see it in action.
