Alignment with Standards: (must support unit standards identified in TWS 3) SECTION 59-59-20. Development of curriculum based on career cluster system; individual graduation plans; role of school districts. (A) The Department of Education shall develop a curriculum, aligned with state content standards, organized around a career cluster system that must provide students with both strong academics and real-world problem solving skills. Students must be provided individualized educational, academic, and career-oriented choices and greater exposure to career information and opportunities. This system must promote the involvement and cooperative effort of parents, teachers, and school counselors in assisting students in making these choices, in setting career goals, and in developing individual graduation plans to achieve these goals. (B) School districts must lay the foundation for the clusters of study system in elementary school by providing career awareness activities. In the middle grades programs must allow students to identify career interests and abilities and align them with clusters of study for the development of individual graduation plans. Finally, high school students must be provided guidance and curricula that will enable them to complete successfully their individual graduation plans, preparing them for a seamless transition to relevant employment, further training, or postsecondary study Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: (should parallel information in TWS Section 3) The students who will be participating in this lesson are about to graduate from high school and will be entering the workforce or going to college. Accommodations: (should parallel information in TWS 3 and show use of TWS 1 data)

Materials: PowerPoint, Promethean board, table topics cards, target, marker, pencils, career questions sheet, paper,
stop watch

Procedures: 1. Separate the board into two sides 2. Ask students what they see in their lives 10 years from now. 3. Write their responses on the right side of the board. 4. Ask students how they are going to get to these things. Write the responses on the left side of the board. 5. Today you guys are going to be a huge part of the lesson and I really need you to help me by thinking about yourself and where you are going in life and how you are planning on getting there. I am going to call you each up one at a time and have you write your name up here. This is a chart that I have made to look like a target. The middle says I am all set the next ring says I have some options to choose from and the last ring says I have no Idea. Help me to make a good decision. These are all referring to where you stand on making a career choice. Have you been inspired to choose any one certain career? Are you sure that is what you want to do? If so you should write your name on the red circle in the middle that says Im all set. If you have some idea but arent quite sure yet you would write your name in the middle ring. If you have no idea and still need a lot of help in deciding write your name in the last ring. It is okay if you do not know what you want to do yet but this is your life and you are very near the end of high school and you need to be thinking about life after this. 6. Call the students up one at a time. If they put their name in the red circle ask What career have you chosen? If they put their name in the middle ask What are you considering? If they put their name in the last ring say Thank you for being honest. Lets work on choosing! 7. When the students are finished say This activity was to get you thinking about where yo u stand right now. Not to scare you but real life if quickly approaching. You should decide what you want to do in life and how you are going to get there. 8. Hand out the sheets that say What careers/career are you thinking about choosing? and I want to have a career because and have them fill out the sheet. 9. Take up the sheet. 10. Have the students stand and come to the front to get a sticker and return to their seat. Have the students move to the pre-arranged desks according to their stickers. 11. Say We are going to do an activity called table topics. In this activity each one of you will be given a card. The card has a number on it. Each person in your group should have a number 1-4. Number one goes first. Two second. And so on. Each person will have thirty seconds to share what is on their card and talk about it. I will tell you when that time is up. Then, the group responds to you with their thoughts. There is no right or wrong answer to anything during this time. You only express your thoughts on the topic. Be sure to stay on topic and listen to what the person is saying. 12. Give out able topic cards.

13. Ready, Go. 14. After table topics are over, have the children move back to their seats and pull up the power point. Say Today we have talked about careers that we may choose. No matter what careers we choose we will always have to have some type of interview with someone. I have arranged a PowerPoint that we are going to look at that will give us some pointers on how to have a good interview. 15. Go through the PowerPoint. 16. Have the students quick write their plans after high school and turn it into me at the end of class. Activity Analysis: (must support TWS 3 and show use of TWS 1 data)
The first activity where students tell me what they would like to see in their life in the next ten years and where they tell me what they have to do to get there gets the lesson started by helping students to start thinking about all of the things that they should be focusing on in life. I chose to do the target activity next because the students need to know what their plans are in life. The target helps them to place themselves in a category and lets them see where their peers are as well. When the students place their name on the target and see where they are in relation to everyone else it helps them to realize what the next steps are in achieving their goals. Table topics are used in this lesson to evoke discussion among the group. The topics that are used in this table topics discussion are specifically meant to get students thinking about life after high school and what they need to do in order to achieve the goals that they have set for themselves. I will use the promethean board to display the PowerPoint that I have planned to share with the class. I chose not use the promethean board for the target because I would like to keep the target displayed in the classroom to serve as a reminder throughout the year as to what students are doing, where they plan to go, and how they have progressed.
