Perfume Extraction of scent from selected flowers To find out whether we could make perfume and would it smell like the flowers or the rubbing alcohol. Hypothesis Apparatus : : Extraction of flowers produces scent 7 small jars, rubbing alcohol, wooden spoon, vanilla, cotton swab, tweezers (pipette), 1/8 measuring cup, whole cloves, black pen and 10 different types of flowers (ex: jasmine, white rose, red rose, pink rose, lily, red chrysanthemum, yellow chrysanthemum, white carnation, daisy and double daisy). Variables : Identify which variables are fixed/ manipulated/ responding variables. Procedures : 1. Press as many plant and flower samples into 1/8 measuring cup as you can. Place each sample in its own jar. 2. Except for the cloves, crush the flower samples as finely as you can with a wooden spoon. 3. Add two teaspoons of rubbing alcohol and continue crushing the flower samples. 4. Add about 10 cloves to one of the jars and then add the rest of the alcohol. 5. Put lids on all the jars, and allow them to sit in a warm place for about a week. 6. After a week, open one of the jars and dip in the cotton swab. Lift the swab toward your face, and fan the sir around the moist tip so that the odor reaches your nose. 1

Science Fair for Young Children Guided Experiments 7. Dab the moist tip against the back of your wrist, then allow the spot to dry. Smell it. 8. Use the tweezers to remove a sample of the plant material, and let it dry on the paper towel. Smell it. Records / Data collecting : Summary should be written on the observation.
