Developmental Stages Outline for 2nd graders 1) Intellectual development 1. Hands-on learners 2.

In the concrete operational stage and can work though concrete (real world) problems better 3. Still struggle with the abstract problems 4. Better able to manage their own ideas and information 5. Start to have a longer attention span 2) Physical development 1. Will experience a growth spurt 2. Quite a bit of agility and endurance 3. Fine motor skills begin to be more fine-tuned 4. Very high in energy 5. Large mussels are more developed 6. Gross motor skills are better than their fine motor skills 7. Have a good sense of balance 8. When they get tired, they may choose not to rest 9. Vary widely in height, weight, and physical appearance 3) Psychological/ Emotional development 1. Becoming less egocentric 2. Start to develop perspective taking seeing things from others points of view 3. Understand conservation They understand that if you smash a ball of clay, the amount of clay stays the same. 4. Understand that many things are a part of multiple categories. They understand that pencils belong to both the pencils group and the writing tools group. 5. Realize that friends are people you enjoy spending time with that share similarities with 6. Trust is a strong factor both in choosing and being friends 7. Evaluate themselves and others based on their relationships with their peers. 8. Start to understand that one situation can lead to many different emotions Ex. A child may understand that moving up to the 3rd grade can be happy and sad. 9. Start to learn social norms for emotion Act happy when someone gives them a gift they dont like 10. Understand that what makes one child happy does not make another one happy
