permanent seat in UNSC India joined the UNSC in 2011 after a hiatus of 19 years. During this absence, post cold war, Indias relationship with the body and country like China, Brazil, Germany and South Africa had changed dramatically. The world expected two things of India as it joined the UNSC in 2011 a responsible leadership on the issue of international peace and security and constructive engagement that would improve the effectiveness and legitimacy of the UNSC. On the responsible leadership the great expectation was diluted the Indias claim of being a permanent member in UNSC when India did not undertake any action on Libya- Syria that can be constructed as detrimental to the international order. As it was witness in the past, with long history of taking tough stand against the UNSC but not able to turn out to be a successful effort. In1950 India was elected for its first term itself it was successful to outbreak the peace process in Korean War by repatriation of prisoners-of-war and refugees. However, in1961 Indias arm intervention to wrest Goa form Portugal, 1965 India Pakistan war, and 1967 Israeli Arab issue. It turned hardly productive on any issues. In subsequent year India found itself in a tight corner at UN after its intervention in the East Pakistan. And 1975 nuclear test tighten proliferation controls over India. India became pariah state. Following era of US-Iran Hostage crisis, Iran- Iraq War, Israel- Lebanon and Falklands/Malvinas war, and Peace process with Sri Lanka. Indias stand over international issues always conflicted over the circumstances faced by either on the domestic political conditions or counties poor human rights implementation and international pressure on the issue and stand of UNSC as a whole.
