Justin Honra WRD 103 Genre Analysis: Letter to Legislators 11/5/13 Letters to legislators occur in forms such as handwritten

letters, emails, or as attachments to petitions constructed by common citizens or lobbyists. The receiving end may not necessarily have to strictly be a legislator but more so as anyone with power or influence that is able to create change. These letters are usually created after situations where the writer experiences a situation or sees an idea or doctrine dissatisfying and can be improved. This genre offers the interaction of ideas between people living under the policies and people making them. The goal is to bridge the opinions of the writer and the power of the reader in order to create a compromise or resolution to the issue. The structures of letters to legislators are fairly similar to each other when examples are compared making the genre easily recognizable. These letters usually contain a self-identification of the writer, address the issue via facts or personal testimonies, how it affects the reader, a suggestion of an idea to improve or resolve the issue, and how that would better affect both parties. They are also usually very short and concise probably to accommodate the short time that the busy readers have. People with influence might have multiple letters to read and address.
