This is a public document and will be readily available for inspection at the school site and at the District Office. The Safe School Action Plan is part of the Comprehensive Safe School Plan and will be evaluated and amended by the school site council or school safety planning committee prior to March 1 of every year.

ABC Unified School District Child Welfare and Attendance Safe School Action Plan The staff, students, and parents of Leal Elementary School are committed to providing an outstanding instructional program that will equip students for a productive work-life, enable students to participate in a democracy as effective and informed citizens, encourage continuous individual development, and prepare students to join a culturally diverse society.

Baseline Data and Resources: Leal Elementary School is a modern, well-maintained school facility situated on a spacious property. Buildings are situated to facilitate the easy movement of students, staff, and visitors from one location to the next. There are several points of ingress/egress, only two of which are opened at the start and end of the school day. Safety of students and staff is a primary concern of all stakeholders of Leal Elementary School. The school is in compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and state earthquake standards. The schools disaster preparedness plan includes steps for ensuring student and staff safety during a disaster. Fire, earthquake, and lockdown drills are conducted on a monthly basis throughout the school year. Students are supervised upon arrival at school within the lunch/quad area. Students are fully supervised during recess and lunch breaks by a minimum of two staff members per playground area. All students are provided instruction on what to do in the event of an emergency during the first week of school and practice these emergency response skills at the monthly disaster drills. The School Safety Committee meets on a regular basis to review site safety concerns and to assist with the identification of items needing repair or creating a possible hazard. Emergency supplies are inventoried and re-stocked on a regular basis. A team of one day and one evening custodian ensures that classrooms, restrooms and campus grounds are kept clean and safe. All electrical, plumbing, roofing and fixtures are in good working condition and meet applicable building and

government code requirements. A scheduled maintenance program is administered by ABC Unified School District to ensure that all classroom and facility repairs are maintained to a degree of adequacy that ensures an optimal learning envirnonment.

Areas Needing Change: One area of concern is the front entrance to the school. Visitors enter through the front office door, sign in, obtain a visitors badge, and enter through a swinging door. Some community members have expressed concern that there exists no secured entry system, e.g., a buzzer entry system, to prevent the entrance of intruders on campus.
