Date: September 18, 2013 Unit of Study: Math Standard: K.4.b.

Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted. [K-CC4b] K.5 Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects. [K-CC5] Key Component Addressed: Counting and Cardinality Know number names and the count sequence Count to tell the number of objects What We Will Do: Whole Group: Students will construct a picture using ten black sticker dots provided after listening to the book Ten Black Dots Small Group: Students will then go to assigned small group centers for extension Time/Materials: 60 90 minutes total Whole Group: 30 - 45 minutes The book Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews 10 black sticker dots per student Worksheet (see attached) Small Group Centers: 30 - 45 minutes 15 minutes at each center then rotate. 1. Racing Bears Game Students take turns rolling a die moving their bear up for each die rolled. (Kinesthetic) 2. Computers (Technology) Success-maker math games (Auditory/Visual) 3. Ipads (Technology) (if available) Math counting games 4. Math Journal Students need to write the date, paste their sentence under the date and then write their numbers 1-10 and must draw 10 objects of their choice. 5. Animal Count Choose an animal, count the eyes on the animal, record the number of eyes on the record form, repeat for each of the animal features on the record form, check to see if you counted correctly.

Engage Introduce book: "I have a cool book that Mrs. White gave me that is all about, of all things, BLACK DOTS! That seems weird, dont you think? I mean, how can someone write a whole book just about dots?" "This book got me thinking. What could WE make with 10 black dots?" Review Counting Boys and girls, these past 2 weeks we have been practicing counting. Lets count together what we have learned so far. All count together 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 Great job counting boys and girls! What number comes after 9? (Visual/Auditory Learners) Read: Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews Transition: Boys and girls, I would like you to tiptoe back to your seats and I will be looking for the quietest children to give a warm and fuzzy to. Explain (Kinesthetic Learners) We are going to create pictures with black dots today. Lets look at some ways we could use black dots in our drawings." The illustrator of this book had some wonderful ideas! He used black dots to make eyes. How many eyes do you have? (two) And he used them to make wheels on this train. How many wheels does a vehicle have? (four) Can you think of anything else that might be fun to draw that actually has ten black dots on it? How about a bug, are there any bugs that you might see in the springtime that have black dots on them? (Draw ladybug.) Any other ideas? Before handing out supplies put paper handout up to board Instruct them to write their names on the top of the paper. Create sample picture with dots as example. Explain that you are going to give students each 10 black dots. They will need to create a picture using all of their dots. Ask them to please not copy picture on the board Remind students that you will be looking for the quietest worker to give warm and fuzzy to. Explore Hand out supplies Pass out sticker dots and paper handouts. Remind them to write their names on the top of the paper.

Handout sheets have an area for students to write how many dots they used and what they made with the dots : "I used ___ black dots to make a ____" They must use all ten dots and write the number 10 in the space before black Let students know that they will have to try their best to spell the word on their own. Prompt any students having difficulty coming up with ideas to look on board, or help them with ideas. When done, they can color drawing with crayons

Evaluate When pictures are complete: Review counting 0-10 orally with the children. Students will hand in the pictures teachers will check for accuracy. Transition: Students will then be assigned to centers activities Extension: Centers Accommodations/Modifications Kinesthetic Learners will be assigned to hands on centers first Visual/Auditory Learners will go to assigned visual center first Centers Assignments: 1. (Saniya, Romeo, Bryce, Giselle) The teacher will facilitate all centers activities keeping students on task, checking for mastery of skill counting to ten. Aid for IPad center if available.
