LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW Provide an overview/synopsis of the lesson and the topics that it will cover. The lesson will cover the poverty in Arizona by giving examples of people who face the issue of poverty daily, teach statistics, have students think of ways to fix the poverty issue, and overall reflect on the effects of the poverty issue.

OBJECTIVES Describe what you want students to know/be able to do as a result of the lesson. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION What measures will you use to know if you students met the objectives?

Groups of students will need to have a profound detailed poster to present to the class with accurate information organized in a way that makes the information understandable. Rubric will be provided for students to know expectations! PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE What will students need to know prior to completing this lesson and how will you access their prior knowledge? Students by now will know what is poverty, what is the issue with the distribution of wealth, will know some solutions to poverty, as well as have a global perspective on poverty.

TEACHING PROCEDURES Procedural Steps (Step by step instructions for teaching the lesson): 1. Teacher will present students with some stories of people from South Phoenix in order to capture the attention of her students. The stories will be of four homeless people in South Phoenix and how they became homeless and what their lives are like now. The stories are meant to demonstrate to students that there are many reasons as to why people end up in poverty as well as show that there are different kinds of people living in poverty (some that many would never imagine).

2. Students will read the article New Census data: Arizona is second poorest state in the nation by the East Valley Tribune and learn about the different kind of people living in poverty in Arizona. 3. Students are to create a poster that organizes their findings from the article, lists reasons for why people end up in poverty (cause and effect), explain what systems play a role in the issue, and use graphics to display numerical data learned from statistical map of poverty in the U.S. in the year 2012. 4. During their presentation to the class students must explain what they think will happen if nothing is done about the poverty issue. As well as explain what they believe can be done to help fix the issue of poverty and what their own role as students can be. RESOURCES List any references you used to create this lesson.
