Involves 3 steps: -Identify Topics: this model works best with concepts or generalizations. -Specify Learning Objectives: is where the teacher decides exactly what they want the students should know, understand, or be able to do with respect to the topic. -Prepare Examples and Non examples: through a variety of high quality examples, which would include all of the information the students would need to reach the learning objective, allow the teacher to be well prepared for any question and allows them to teach more than one concept at a time by teaching similarly related topics that help prevent confusion of the actual concept being taught.

Occurs in 4 critical thinking phases: -Introduction: is where the teacher reviews the previous lesson and then captures the students attention and establishes the focus of the lesson. -The Open Ended Phase: the teacher presents the students with examples and asks the students to make observations and comparisons of the examples. -The Convergent Phase: is where the teacher asks more specific questions designed to guide the students to an understanding of the concept or generalization. -Closure and Application: this is where the teacher guides the students to the definition of te concept or a statement of the generalization, and the students apply their understanding in a new context.

Teachers must assure that their objectives, learning activities, and assessments are all lined up. Assessments can be used not only to measure the amount of knowledge retained, but to also increase the amount of learning that occurs through discussion and conducting a formative assessment using the results of the summative assessments such as quizzes and exams.

Because high levels of involvement, assured success and a sense of the unknown are features of this kind of lesson, learners are more able to be motivated to participate. -Student involvement and success: this increases intrinsic interest and since success is virtually assured students are more likely to become involved and attempt an answer. -A Sense of the Unknown: people are easily enticed by activities and experiences that evoke curiosity and are challenging.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

People are intrinsically apt to wanting to learn new things. Capitalize on this to make for a more fun filled classroom that allows students to not only learn facts, but also learn actual concepts and be able to apply them in real world circumstances.
