Reflection 2- No Long Term In todays world, there are many judgments put on people and the work they

do, rather than the effort and determination that goes into it. Similarly, Sennett argues that a persons identity is intimately tied to a persons work. People, especially those like Rico who could not find a stable working lifestyle and struggled to make a living, require a strong work ethic so when they do receive a job, they are able to do well at it. Rico wanted his family to have a good life and let his sons go to school, so he devoted his life to being the best he could be at even the most menial of jobs. So technically, Sennetts argument is wrong. What he should really say is that a persons identity is intimately tied to the persons effort they put into their work. Yes, Rico was a janitor, but that does not mean his identity is only a janitor. His effort that he put into his work to support his family and give them the life he thought they deserved. This in turn carried over to Enrico who now lived a life where he seemed successful. The clothes he wore and the things he carried did not define him though, because his effort that he used to arrive where he was is the only thing that truly gives him his identity.
