Objectives: TSW be able to choose healthy foods. TSW be able to explain how eating unhealthy will affect their bodies. Lesson Plan: *Prior to this lesson all allergies have been reported to the teacher from the nurse. We do have a peanut allergy in our classroom, so all foods brought in for testing do not have peanuts! Introduction: Each Student will get a mini marshmallow and one carrot. Ask the students to eat the marshmallow and discuss how their teeth feel. Next, have the students eat the carrot and see how their teeth feel. Do their teeth feel different? If so, why? Discuss about how different foods might affect their teeth and overall health. Process: Play the BrainPopJr video: www.brainpopjr.com- health-food-eating right (free). During the video I will stop and ask the students questions to check for understanding. At the end of the video there is a quiz that we will do as a group. Next, I will have several containers of food and the students will sort the containers as healthy and non-healthy. I will be sure to ask students about the choices they made. Since students may have differing ideas I will encourage them to share their ideas and allow room for class discussions. Then we will review some foods that contain fat. I will ask students if they think its important to eat some fats. I will remind them that eating some fats is important, but eating too much fat is not healthy. As a whole group I will place a single drop of oil on a brown paper bag square. We will observe how the paper changes. The students should be able to see some light through the paper. We will then discuss what fats might do to our bodies. The students will break into small groups and test different kinds of snack food by rubbing foods onto a piece of paper and making observations. Before the students start this experiment I will let them know that it is important to do one food at a time. The students will be in groups of four and each student will get a chance to test a type of snack food. The students will be testing the food on the Eating Right Activity page. They will need to label what food they tested where. After everyone is done, the groups can share their results and observations. We will see if other groups had similar results. We will also compare the food testing results to the brown paper bag with oil on it. *Prior to testing we will choose four snack foods as a group to test. We will vote as a class on the four snack foods.

At the end of the lesson we will come back together as a group and discuss: *Why eating the right food is important for your health. *What are possible problems your body can have if you dont have enough food to eat? *What are possible problems your body can have if you eat too much? *How will you make the right decisions about what you eat. I will remind students that a balanced diet and exercise will help them keep the mind and body in balance. Accommodations:

1. For an ELL there will be plenty of visuals and pictures to help aide in understanding. 2. For a special education student they will be put with a group who is responsible and will include the student in group activities. They will also have pre-cut materials for their Healthy Me Doll.
Enrichment/Extension:

My Plate www.choosemyplate.gov I will explain the MyPlate image and how it is a visual representation to help children remember how to eat healthy and make better food choices. MyPlate is user friendly and conveys a simple message people can readily grasp such as: *all five food groups are important and represented on the plate *fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables
Assessment/Evaluation:

1. On a piece of construction paper that is already pre-cut and folded, the students will represent where junk food and healthy food should be in their bodies. The outside of the folded paper will be labeled Junk Food (representing that junk food should stay outside of the body). The inside flap will be labeled Healthy Food (representing that healthy food should go into the body). This folded piece of construction paper will be a part of the body on the students Healthy Me Doll that will be completed by the end of this IC unit. They will be given pre-made foods to place inside the body and outside of the body. The teacher will observe that by the student placing the junk food outside and healthy food inside, the students are showing that they understand the concept of making healthy food choices. 2. As a class play Blast Off (computer activity) to see how well the class can plan a menu of healthy food and exercise choices. The teacher will be listening to the student discussions and monitor whether the information being shared is accurate and on topic.
