APARTHEID IN SOUTH AFRICA: Source Analysis


Unit Aims/Summary

[Year 11 History]

This unit aims to build upon students knowledge of analysing sources related to the apartheid period of South African history. Students will examine cartoons, sound files and video clips and what they have to say about this period of history. Students will learn how/why it was that the Afrikaans though they had the right to rule over the native people through sources both for and against apartheid and come to an understanding of both sides of the issue. They will learn to critically evaluate sources pertaining to the period of study and come to a conclusion about their message and effectiveness.

Curriculum Links Student Outcomes/Knowledge


By the end of this unit, students will understand how to find the symbolism hidden within visual images such as political cartoons. They will develop critical thinking skills, allowing them to look for and identify bias in sources, and understand how to draw conclusion about the time period in question from the sources examined.

Content
Students have been learning about South Africa during the time of apartheid. This unit will add to this by examining sources from/about the period.

Learning Sequence
MONDAY L6 (1:45 2:30) 45 minutes WEEK 4 Skin scene analysis: Play scene and go through with students. TUESDAY L3 (10:50 11:35) 45 minutes Cartoon analysis: hand out cartoon analysis sheet. Show cartoon on screen and go through questions step by step as class WEDNESDAY L1-2 (9:35 - 11) 85 minutes Continue cartoon analysis: put cartoon up, get class to attempt individual analysis. Audio analysis: hand out sound analysis sheet. Play clip once to hear, then point out questions, then play again. Go through as class. THURSDAY L4 (11:20 - 12) 40 minutes Continue audio analysis: play clip, get class to attempt individual analysis. Introduce test: go through marking scheme and refresh on skills

WEEK 5

Source analysis test part one: visual sources (picures, cartoons), written sources

Source analysis test part two: audio sources

Strategies
Go through how to analyse a cartoon as a whole class - put one on projector, get students to tell me physical features, then go on to how to unpack the symbolism Get students to attempt individual analysis on separate cartoon - remind them of what were looking for (images/words, any symbolism, how to interpret), then go through Similar strategy for audio - whos talking, where, whats the context?

Assessment
Source analysis test: a test of two parts, one comprising of images and written sources, the other of audio clips. Marks will be allocated for: recognition of source information (photographer, speaker, relevant info in caption, etc.), understanding of symbolism, interpreting source in regards to time period. A mark will be given for each main idea. Students will undertake the test over 2 40 minute lessons [summative]
