The integrative model is an instructional model that helps students develop a better understanding of organized bodies of knowledge and to use critical thinking skills to form their own understanding of the topic.

Planning for the lesson occurs in four steps: 1.) Identify Topics- Topics can come from standards, textbooks, or curriculum guides. Choose a topic that involves organized bodies of knowledge. 2.) Specify learning goals- Teachers need to have a goal for what they want the children to understand about the topic and they need to specify content goals. Teachers need to be clear on what they want students to identify, understand, and remember. 3.) Prepare Data- Teachers need to prepare information that students can analyze. Matrixes are typically used to organize data. Pictures in a matrix are important for young children. The number of components that will be compared can be determined by the teacher, the students, or by both the teacher and the student. The data can be gathered by assigning individuals or groups to find the information, by having students gather some information and the teacher adding to the students gathered information, or by a teacher preparing the entire matrix without any students help. Two guidelines used for displaying data: Display the information as a factual form and provide enough information for students to form a conclusion. Technology can help teachers prepare and store data. Databases are very important for storing data.

4.) Specify Questions- Teachers should plan what questions they want to ask in advance.

Implementing occurs in four phases: 1.) Open-Ended phase- Students will describe, compare, and search for patterns in the data. Teachers will help students begin to analyze their data. Phase one occurs in two ways: Get students to focus on a cell in the matrix and then get the students to describe all of the new information or get students to compare and contrast two or more cells in the matrix. Teachers should record students observations or comparisons on the board or document camera. 2.) Causal Phase- Students compare and contrast what they identified in phase one. The students will look for cause-and-effect relationships. The students comparisons should be explainable. 3.) Hypothetical Phase- Students will use information from phase two to think hypothetically by asking what if questions. 4.) Closure and Application- Students use information from previous phases to form generalizations. Students will then apply their understanding to other situations. Note: The phases are not rigid. You can skip some of the phases.

A teacher can access a students understanding of a topic by making them write conclusions about information from matrixes they have previously studied. Assessments should occur frequently. Teacher should students critical thinking to see if they can identify or make conclusions supported by evidence in the matrix. A student should have knowledge of the topic to think critically. Multiple choice questions, short essay responses, or looking at matrix to answer a question are some ways to access a students knowledge.

Student involvement occurs in the integrative model. When students are more involved, this can lead to students being more motivated to learn. When students see how their content can relate to their life, then the students will care more about what they are learning. This model also puts motivational emphasis on cooperation. Students like to work with their classmates. Also, when students see a teacher write on the board the information they gathered, then this students can become more cooperative and interested.

The integrative model is an instructional model used to help students understand organized bodies of knowledge. Students will become critical thinkers by comparing and contrasting information and by thinking hypothetically. Students will also be able to apply what they know to other concepts.
